IOTSC Talk Series: Understanding Semantic Communications

Dear Colleagues and Students,

The State Key Laboratory of Internet of Things for Smart City would like to invite you to join our “IOTSC Talk Series” on 13/09/2023 (Wednesday).
We are pleased to invite Prof. Yulin SHAO from IOTSC as the speaker.

Understanding Semantic Communications
Speaker: Prof. Yulin SHAO, Assistant Professor
Date: 13/09/2023 (Wednesday)
Time: 16:00 – 17:00
Language: English
Venue: N21-5/F Exhibition Hall

Abstract:
Semantic communication is an emerging topic that has gained significant attention recently. A systematic widely-accepted characterization of semantic communication, however, is lacking to date. This talk introduces a new conceptualization of semantic communication and formulates two fundamental problems, which we term language utilization and language design. Our contention is that the challenge of language design can be effectively situated within the broader framework of JSCC theory. To tackle the language utilization problem, we put forth three approaches: semantic encoding, semantic decoding, and combined semantic encoding and decoding. Overall, this talk aims to shed light on the intricate dynamics of semantic communication, paving the way for a deeper understanding of this evolving field.

Speaker’s Bio:
