Dear colleagues and students,
Education is beyond the simple transmission of knowledge; it fundamentally seeks to foster students’ capacity for self-directed learning. In the Feature Story column of this issue’s My UM, we explore how UM’s Faculty of Education has continuously refined its teaching and research initiatives, producing successive generations of educators skilled in meeting the ever-changing demands of society (Click here for the article).
UM has focused on the development of ocean science in recent years. It has established research centres, academic departments, and degree programmes to promote the cultivation of marine talent and innovative research. In this article, we interview the research teams at the university about the progress of their frontier research in areas such as the prevention and control of water body pollution in the coastal waters of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, coastal disaster prevention and mitigation, and ocean technology (Click here to read the article).
Prof Shuji Nakamura, who was awarded the 2014 Nobel Prize in Physics for his invention of the blue light-emitting diode (LED), received the Doctor of Science honoris causa degree from UM in 2020. In the People’s Story column, Prof Nakamura shares with us how he has taken others’ sarcasm and disregard as a powerful motivation to work on new inventions throughout his research career. ‘Don’t give up, even when others call you a fool. Stay true to your innovative ideas,’ he says (Click here for the article).
