HFPJC 15th Anniversary: Diversity and Inclusion at UM – “The Way We Talk” Film Screening and Sharing

In celebration of the 15th anniversary of the Henry Fok Pearl Jubilee College and to promote the University of Macau’s (UM) diversity and inclusion culture, the college hosted a film screening and sharing session entitled “Diversity and Inclusion at UM” on April 10 at Room G013, N21 UM Research Building. The cultural event attracted over 200 UM staff and students, harnessing the power of cinematic art to foster greater empathy toward marginalised communities on campus.

During the event, Professor Hui Sai-chuen Stanley, College Master of Henry Fok Pearl Jubilee College, emphasised, “A university is not just a place for knowledge acquisition but also a space to cultivate humanistic care and social responsibility.” He explained that the choice of screening “The Way We Talk” was to deepen UM members’ understanding of the realities of disadvantaged groups and strengthen their empathy and inclusivity. He further noted that this vision of diversity and inclusion aligns closely with UM residential college’s long-standing commitment to “community and peer education” and remains a key focus of its mission.

Told through the lens of three deaf adults in their twenties, “The Way We Talk” follows Sophie (Chung Suet Ying), who is optimistic and strives to be seen as ‘normal’; Wolf (Neo Yau), who embraces his deafness; and Alan (Marco Ng), who seems more at ease as a member of mainstream society. Despite their differing perspectives, the three friends develop a deep bond through sign language, supporting each other through life’s ups and downs. Through intimate storytelling and sign language dialogues, the film explores the social prejudices, systemic barriers, and identity struggles faced by people with disabilities, prompting viewers to reflect on the true meaning of “inclusion”.

Following the screening, a sharing session was held with director Adam Wong and the lead actor, who engaged in a profound dialogue with attendees. Director Wong shared his creative vision: “I hope this film can break the stereotypes surrounding the deaf community and help people understand that ‘different’ does not mean ‘deficient.'” He highlighted key scenes designed to immerse audiences in the sensory world of deaf individuals. During the Q&A, UM students and staff raised thought-provoking questions, sparking lively discussions on filmmaking techniques, social issues, and everyday interactions. An anonymous UM student remarked, “The film’s emotional impact challenges stereotypes about people with disabilities and encourages active support for diversity and inclusion.” Another added, “The struggles faced by the characters make me reflect on whether I am truly inclusive toward those who are ‘different’ around me.” The event concluded with a strong call to action, inspiring participants to contribute to a more inclusive society.
