[FED] “Macao Training Programme for Primary and Secondary School Principals/Teachers from Mainland” Concludes Successfully

Hosted by the Faculty of Education (FED) at the University of Macau (UM), the “Macao Training Programme for Primary and Secondary School Principals/Teachers from Mainland” successfully concluded on 23 January, 2026. Over a period of nearly two weeks of intensive professional training, 23 school principals and lead teachers from various provinces and municipalities across Mainland China gained a comprehensive understanding of Macao’s educational ecosystem and innovative practices through in-depth learning and field exchanges. The event culminated in a closing ceremony where several Mainland and Macao schools signed Memorandum of Understanding (MOU), establishing sister school partnerships and marking a new chapter of deeper, substantive exchange in education between the two regions.

The curriculum of the training programme was rich, diverse, and well-structured, blending theoretical insights with practical guidance. Students attended a series of seminars delivered by professors from the Faculty of Education and the Faculty of Social Sciences at UM. The training programme covered various aspects of non-tertiary education in Macao, such as AI and education, STEM education, patriotic education, and home-school-community collaboration. Additionally, through a thematic salon, principals from both the Mainland and Macao engaged in dialogues on teachers’ lifelong learning and school-based support systems.

The training programme also featured a series of field visits and exchange activities. Students visited the Education and Youth Development Bureau (DSEDJ) to understand the top-level design and resource allocation mechanisms in Macao’s education policies. They also toured FED’s Science Laboratory, AI Education Lab, Kinesiology Laboratory, Macao Science Center, UM’s State Key Laboratory of Internet of Things for Smart City, Stanley Ho East Asia College, and the museum/laboratory of the Faculty of Business Administration, experiencing firsthand Macao’s investment in technological innovations and whole-person education. Another highlight of the training programme was students’ visits to local primary and secondary schools, including Escola Secundária Luso-Chinesa de Luís Gonzaga Gomes, Our Lady of Fatima Girls’ School, Premier School Affiliated to Hou Kong Middle School, Pui Ching Middle School Macau, Kung Luen Vocational & Technical Middle School, Lou Hau High School, and The Affiliated School of the University of Macau. Through campus tours, classroom observations, and focused discussions, students and their Macao counterparts engaged in profound exchanges on topics such as life education, patriotic education, community resource utilization, AI and STEM education, vocational and technical training, and home-school collaboration.

At the closing ceremony, Prof. Lianghuo FAN, Dean of the Faculty of Education and Director of the Centre for STEM and AI Education, congratulated the students on their successful completion of the programme and commended them for the enthusiasm demonstrated for learning. He stated that the progarmme served not just as a platform for knowledge transfer but also as a bridge for fostering mutual understanding and collaboration between the education sectors of Mainland China and Macao. He encouraged the students to apply what they had learned into actions towards high-quality development in their schools; and welcomed future cooperation with the Faculty of Education in educational research and practices. Following his address, several school principals, including Qinglin LI, Yi ZHANG, Xiaoguang LI, Yongsheng GUO, and Tong LIN, shared their experiences and insights as representatives of the students. They unequivocally agreed that the training programme not only systematically provided insights into Macao’s educational systems and successful practices but also broadened their administrative perspectives, inspiring new ideas for the future development of their respective schools.

One of the most fruitful outcomes of the training programme was the signing of MOU for school partnerships during the closing ceremony. Witnessed by Director Changshan REN from the Ministry of Education and Dean Lianghuo FAN, several pairs of schools from the Mainland and Macao have officially become sister schools. These agreements build a bridge for direct communication and cooperation. They pave the way for future in-depth collaborations between these schools in areas such as teacher and student exchanges, joint curriculum development, collaborative teaching research, and resource sharing, thereby contributing to the synergistic educational development across regions.
