On 3 March 2026, a delegation from the University of Manchester visited the University of Macau (UM). The delegation was warmly received by Prof. Rui MARTINS, Vice Rector (Global Affairs); Prof. Lianghuo FAN, Dean and Director of Centre for STEM and AI Education of the Faculty of Education (FED); Prof. Mingming ZHOU, Associate Dean (Research and Graduate Studies) and Programme Coordinator of Master of Philosophy; Prof. Dongbo ZHANG, Associate Dean (Teaching and Curriculum Development) and Programme Coordinator of Doctor of Education; Prof. Shulin YU, Assistant Dean (Student Affairs) and Director of Centre for Language and Literacy Education; and Prof. Xin GUO.

The delegation first visited the University Gallery, where Vice Rector Martins introduced UM’s history, internationalization strategy, research layout, and the development of the new campus in the Guangdong-Macao In-Depth Cooperation Zone in Hengqin. Subsequently, the delegation moved to the Faculty of Education for a meeting. Dean Fan provided a detailed introduction to the faculty’s achievements in STEM and AI education and shared the latest strategic research directions of the faculty. During the meeting, both parties engaged in in-depth discussions on several areas for potential collaboration in the future, including student exchange, joint programmes, staff mobility, and co-organization of conferences.

In the afternoon, both institutions co-hosted the “Macao-Manchester Forum on International Education, Educational Leadership and Educational Policy” at the Lecture Hall of the Cultural Building. Scholars from both sides shared profound insights on topics such as higher education in the global context, leadership innovation, and policy development. FED scholars participating in the forum included Prof. Xiufeng LIU, Director of Educational Testing and Assessment Research Centre; Prof. Dong NGUYEN; Prof. Sou Kuan VONG; and Prof. Xin GUO. Members of the University of Manchester delegation, including Dr. Paul ARMSTRONG, Dr. Heather COCKAYNE, Dr. Miguel LIM, Dr. Bee HUGHES, Dr. Skye ZHAO, and Dr. Helen Choen Yin CHAN, also delivered speeches during the forum.

Prior to the delegation’s visit, at the invitation of the University of Manchester, Dean Fan attended the forum on “The Future of Educational Research and Scholarship” held at the University of Manchester’s East Asia Centre in Hong Kong on 27 February 2026. As a keynote speaker, Dean Fan presented his insights into AI and education, international education, and educational leadership. Other keynote speakers included Prof. Joshua Ka-ho MOK, Vice-President (Administration) and Provost and Dean of the Graduate School of The Hang Seng University of Hong Kong; Prof. Chi-Keung CHEUNG, Dean of the Faculty of Education of The Chinese University of Hong Kong; and Prof. Bruce MACFARLANE, Dean of the Faculty of Education and Human Development of The Education University of Hong Kong. The forum was opened online with a welcoming address by Prof. Lisa MURTAGH, Head of the Manchester Institute of Education, and was moderated by Dr. Bee HUGHES.

This series of exchange activities has not only deepened the friendship between the University of Macau and the University of Manchester but also established a firm foundation for deeper cooperation in international education and research innovation in the future.
