CTLE held Professional Development Event on Supporting Neurodiversity in Higher Education

On 11 Mar, CTLE held a professional development event, focusing on supporting neurodiversity in higher education. About 60 UM academic staff joined the event.

The workshop, ‘Learning-Teaching Support for Neurodiversity’, delivered by Dr. Eria Ping-ying Li from The Education University of Hong Kong, explored inclusive practices in education with a strong focus on neurodiversity and student-centred support. The session highlighted the global shift from a medical model towards a neurodiverse, strength-based approach, emphasizing respect for individual differences, access and meaningful participation in learning environments.

Dr. Li introduced the conceptual framework with the cycle of Positive psychology, multiple Intelligences and Positive Behavior support. In addition, key concepts such as inclusive education trends, autism spectrum diversity and twice-exceptional (2e) learners were discussed with real-life examples. Participants examined typical behaviours and sensory needs of students on the autism spectrum with the challenges faced at different educational stages.

Practical strategies were shared for learning, teaching and assessment support, including enhanced visual aids, clear course structures, flexible assessment methods and multiple modes of expression. Colleagues worked in groups and shared conversations based on real-life scenarios such as including classroom behaviours, assessment requests, residential life and internships.

Dr. Li concluded the workshop with suggestions of buddy support, neurodiversity hub, mentorship programme and AI & IT-enabled education. She also encouraged colleagues to explore positive changes, think out of the box, andprovide options to allow enhancement of teaching and learning with the support for neurodiversity.

The slides and workshop materials are available to download. The video recording is also ready to watch.
