[FED] Prof. Lianghuo FAN, Dean of Faculty of Education at University of Macau, Delivers Webinar on AI and Teacher Education for Oxford University Centre for Global Higher Education

Recently, Prof. Lianghuo FAN, Chair Professor, Dean of the Faculty of Education and Director of its Centre for STEM and AI Education at the University of Macau (UM), was invited by the Centre for Global Higher Education (CGHE), Oxford University to deliver a webinar themed “AI and Teacher Education in Macao: Issues, Challenges and Innovations in Higher Education”. The webinar examined AI’s impact on Macao’s higher education and teacher education, attracting attention from global education professionals.

As a renowned scholar with extensive international experience, Prof. Fan also leads the faculty’s Centre for STEM and AI Education. He noted that Macao’s higher education, especially pre-service and in-service teacher education, has been profoundly influenced by AI, particularly generative AI.

Focusing on Macao’s educational context, Prof. Fan analyzed AI’s dual effects: it brings opportunities like improved teaching efficiency and personalized learning, but also poses challenges to university teacher education, such as updating content and fostering teachers’ AI literacy. He shared innovative measures to tackle these challenges, emphasizing universities should take the lead: offering faculty AI training, integrating AI into courses, and developing systematic training for school teachers—key to equipping educators for an AI-driven era.

The CGHE, known for its research on inequalities in global higher education and science, regularly hosts webinars featuring leading scholars from around the world to facilitate international academic exchange. Prof. Fan’s webinar not only showcased UM’s achievement and latest initiatives in AI and teacher education but also contributed to global dialogue on how higher education can adapt to technological change and cultivate high-quality educators for the future.
