IOTSC Distinguished Visiting Scholar Series: AI and Remote Sensing Big Data for Water Cycle and Global Hazards Studies
Dear Colleagues and Students,
The State Key Laboratory of Internet of Things for Smart City would like to invite you to join our “UM Distinguished Visiting Scholar Series” on 16/08/2023 (Wednesday). We are pleased to invite Gallogly Chair Professor of Hydrology and Remote Sensing, Prof. Yang HONG from National Weather Center HyDROS Lab, as the speaker.
AI and Remote Sensing Big Data for Water Cycle and Global Hazards Studies
Speaker: Prof. Yang HONG, Gallogly Chair Professor of Hydrology and Remote Sensing, Director of National Weather Center HyDROS Lab, Director of OU Hydrology and Water Security Program
Date: 16/08/2023 (Wednesday)
Time: 10:30 – 12:00
Language: English
Venue: E11-G015
Abstract:
This talk first covers AI-based radar/satellite remote sensing big data retrieval/application such as PERSIANN-CCS, iMERG; then present advanced hydrologic model CREST family; and finally discuss global water security including various applications to flood and storm surge operational research in U.S.A. and China.
Speaker’s Bio:
Hong is the Gallogly Chair Professor in Remote Sensing Hydrology and founding Director of National Weather Center HyDROS Lab (http://hydro.ou.edu).
Dr. Hong’s research interests include hydrological modeling and water resources management, radar/satellite remote sensing and data assimilation systems for improved hazards (e.g. floods, landslide) prediction under a changing climate. Dr. Hong has published more than 300 refereed articles, highly cited 220,000+ with H-Index 78. As Inventor, Dr. Hong has released 11 technologies including satellite algorithms TMPA, PERSIANN-CCS, distributed hydrological model CREST family, iCRESLIDE and the NASA Global Hazard Prediction (flood/landslide) System.
Hong was Chair of AGU Precipitation Committee and UN Advisor for African Climate Council. Hong received NASA Achievement Award: “For significant achievements in systematically promoting and accelerating the use of NASA scientific research results for societal benefits”. Also Receipt of Regents Award for Superior Research and Creative Activities. Hong has affiliated with UC Irvine, NASA/NOAA, 清華/北大, and University of Oklahoma.
