On 16 Aug, CTLE held New Faculty Training, which was attended by about 50 UM academic staff members.

Prof. Katrine Wong, Director of CTLE, spoke about UM’s student-centred education and emphasized the importance of pedagogical design. While addressing matters related to active learning, assessment and feedback, she shared with faculty members strategies on integration of generative AI tools in teaching and learning activities: faculty members can design learning activities that encourage students to exercise critical and analytical thinking skills. Other aspects such as course evaluation, teaching resources and support services were also introduced. Quoting Rector Song’s lecture at the Convocation, she invited faculty members to work together towards creating for our students an engaging and supportive learning environment.

In the second part of the half-day event, Dr. Alice Lee (ELC-FAH), Dr. Chris Fulton (CTLE), and Mr. Miguel Costa (FST) shared a technology session on using MyUM portal, SI Web and UMMoodle to enhance teaching and learning. They also highlighted CTLE’s T&L blog, which provides T&L tips and advice to UM academic staff. The AI detection function with Turnitin in Moodle was discussed.

CTLE’s New Faculty Training provides new faculty members with a general introduction to teaching and learning in the UM context. The training aims to enhance colleagues’ teaching skills, with which colleagues will be able to facilitate more effective teaching and learning at UM. The training covers topics such as principles of learning, university policies related to T&L, fundamental concepts of course design and e-learning tools.
