ICTO Tips – Campus Network Performance Test And Feedback Platform

現時在一般情況下,互聯網速度可以達到50Mbps(6.25MBps)。在非繁忙時段,互聯網速度可高達200Mbps(25MBps)。

In order to make it faster to diagnose and test campus network performance, we launch the new “Campus Network Performance Test And Feedback Platform” (https://speedtest.icto.um.edu.mo). Designed for staff and students, this platform provides speed testing in case of encounter network issues and submits testing results.

Through your participation, testing and feedback, we will be able to identify and follow up on network performance issues in different areas of campus (including classrooms, dormitories, offices, etc.) more effectively. This will greatly help in improving the overall quality of network services.

We value your feedback and will follow up and improve. Our goal is to provide you with better and more reliable campus network services.

  1. Test Scope:
    1. The Intranet speed test is mainly tested for the Campus Local Area Network (LAN) internal network and measures the connection speed between the client device and the campus data center server equipment.

    2. The Internet speed test tests the connection speed between the client device and the Local Internet Service Provider (ISP) to the external Internet through the campus network.

  2. Purpose of the test:
    1. The Intranet speed test evaluates the performance of wired or wireless network internal communications in Campus LAN to determine the efficiency and speed of internal data sharing, teaching, and administrative application operation, etc.

    2. The Internet speed test evaluates the connection speed between the client device and the Internet to determine how well you are browsing the website, downloading files, video conferencing, and watching streaming, etc.

  3. Test Method
    1. The Intranet speed test can be carried out by selecting “Intranet” in the “Campus Network Performance Test And Feedback Platform” to measure the transmission speed, delay time and other indicators within the Campus LAN.

    2. The Internet speed test can also be carried out by selecting “Internet” in the “Campus Network Performance Test And Feedback Platform”, and the test is conducted through the connection to an external Internet test server to measure your transmission speed, delay time, and other indicators.

Overall, the Intranet speed test focuses on the connection performance between your device and the internal communication of the wired or wireless network in the Campus LAN, while the Internet speed test looks at the connection performance between your device and the external Internet. Both tests have their own unique purpose and testing methods that help us evaluate and optimize network connections.

If you encounter problems using campus network services, please complete The Campus Network Performance Report Form and provide relevant information for further investigation. For details, please refer to the following FAQ:

  1. Web browsing and Email: Each device typically requires a transfer speed of at least 1-5 Mbps. This is enough to browse the web smoothly, send and receive e-mail, and perform general online tasks.

  2. Streaming HD video: If you want to watch streaming video in high definition (1080p) on your device, you typically need a transfer speed of at least 5-10 Mbps per device. Higher streaming quality, such as 4K, may require speeds of 25Mbps or higher.

  3. Online gaming and Video conference call: The transfer speed you need to play online games and make high-quality video calls depends on the specific game or communication platform. Typically, each device requires a transfer speed of at least 3-10Mbps to ensure certain gaming experience or video call quality.

At present, under normal circumstances, the Internet speed can reach 50Mbps (6.25MBps). During off-peak hours, Internet speeds can be as high as 200Mbps (25MBps).

Please note that these figures are for reference only, and the actual required transfer speed will also be affected by other factors such as network congestion (multiple devices in the same time or space for high-bandwidth activities, downloading or uploading large files, etc.), the connection speed of the website or application and the Local Internet Provider in Macau, the loading of the destination server and other external factors.
