The Dos and Don’ts of Social Media during Your Job Hunting

Social media has become a part of our daily lives. Almost everyone has at least one social media account, and the posts and photos you post inevitably shape your online image. Although social media accounts have privacy options, you still need to be careful about what you post online, especially if you’re actively looking for a job.

Dos

• Keep your profile up to date. Think of your social media account as your online resume to show your professional side to prospective employers.
• Keep in touch with key people. Use your social media account to connect with key people who can refer you to the jobs you want. Connect with recruiters, hiring managers, or peers who work in related fields.

Don’ts

• Don’t post inappropriate photos or comments; they become part of your online image. Go through your past posts and photos to see if any of them need to be removed.
• Don’t use incorrect grammar. Incorrect grammar makes you look unprofessional.
• Don’t forget to keep your profile consistent across all your social media accounts. Your work experience and educational background should be consistent across all your profiles.
