CTLE Held Two Events Focusing on Strategic learning for UM Teachers and Students

In March, CTLE had the pleasure of inviting Prof. Robert K. Kamei from Duke-NUS Medical School, National University of Singapore to give a professional development workshop as well as a student lecture.
The first event, ‘Applying the Science of Learning for Educators’ was held on13 March and attracted about 40 academic staff. Prof. Kamei shared his insights on applying the science of learning to become a strategic teacher. Citing various research findings, he emphasized that, contrary to common assumptions, learning does not come naturally to individuals and that the most effective learning strategies are often unintuitive. He also advocated a holistic perspective that considers individual goals, motivation and mindsets, not just isolated techniques.
In the workshop, Prof. Kamei stressed that effective learning is often not easily recognizable and suggested that teachers would need to prepare their students to learn from their lectures and that teachers should help students learn from recalling but not recognition. (Watch Video)
The second event, held on 14 March, was a lecture for students and attracted about 70 UM students. Prof. Kamei provided students with holistic insights into strategic learning.
He engaged with students with various memory activities such as ‘Animal Farm’ (a series of animal photos), two-second advantage and a gorilla video challenge. Prof. Kamei explained that every learner is different and needs a personalized approach to learn effectively. He explored the science of metacognition and self-regulation, emphasized the importance of lifestyle factors like health, well-being and sleep, and offered specific evidence-based strategies that students could directly apply, such as chunking, mnemonics and encoding specificity.

教與學優化中心於3月份邀請了來自杜克-新加坡國立大學醫學院教授Robert K. Kamei進行兩場講座並作主講嘉賓,包括教師工作坊及學生講堂,與澳大師生共同探究高效教與學方法。
在3月13日舉行的首場活動,Kamei教授與澳大同事們探討了高效學習的奧秘,他以給合研究論據,指出優秀的教學,不應單一着眼於教學技巧,更需從學習者自身目標、動機和思維模式等全面角度出發;他也強調高效的學習不容易被識別,並建議老師好好教學,幫助學生主動回憶內容,而不單單被動地記憶或識別知識。活動吸引了40多位教學人員參與。(觀看影片)
3月14日,中心再次邀請Kamei教授,與澳大學生分享如何掌握高效學習的秘訣;Kamei教授分別以記憶遊戲,如〝動物農場〞(一系列動物照片)、〝兩秒優勢力〞和尋找猩猩等與學生互動記憶對學習的重要性,並強調需要個人化學習方式,他同時探討對自我認知過程的思考和自我調節等科學學習概念,並分享記憶解碼特異性、課題交錯訓練等實用策略,同時他表示個人健康、幸福感和睡眠等生活方式都能影響學習。近70名澳大學生參與。(觀看影片)
