MCM College: Camões House Presents – Señorita’s Spanish Fun Class

On the afternoon of October 24, 2024, participants came to W31-G033 room to take part in this activity. The activity was designed to integrate new cultures into the college by providing basic knowledge of Spanish in a fun, yet highly interactive program in Cantonese.

The two-hour workshop engaged and immersed participants in a different language and culture, while learning about the countries that speak Spanish, through culture, music, dance, food, and iconic sightseeing examples. The class was conducted by Ms. Vivian Cheong, a Macau born, but raised in Venezuela, teacher of Spanish in Cantonese and Mandarin. She is currently reading a master’s program in Spanish at MUST.

The workshop was co-organized by Stephanie Andaluz, Camões House Resident Tutor, who provided Spanish basic conversation while talking about the similarities of Cantonese words with local Peruvian vocabulary, making students curious about this country and ensuing the audience into bursts of laughter, joy and excitement. They were amazed with how influential their culture and language has affected other parts of the world. Cantonese speakers at MCMC has an inclusive program for them, and they enjoyed the workshop filled with a distinctive flavor of culture and novelty.

Before the event ended, participants raised questions about the difficulties of learning Spanish, as well as sharing opinions about shared their favorite country, and reflected on the differences and similarities between their culture and language with other countries.
