Abstract:

We develop a model to explore the conditions under which domestic information policy causes global media bias. When information flows freely, reputation-concerned independent media counterbalance state influence over public perceptions. However, when access to independent media is restricted, it can lead to increased regulation of domestic media and encourage independent media to misreport to international audiences. Our results highlight the essential role of open information channels in maintaining balanced global reporting.
