CTLE Hosted Forum on Rethinking Assessment in the Age of GenAI
On January 15, 2025, the Centre for Teaching and Learning Enhancement (CTLE) hosted an interactive session on adapting assessment strategies in response to the growing influence of generative AI (AI) in education. Led by Prof. Katrine Wong and Dr. Chris Fulton, the forum addressed one of the most pressing challenges facing educators today.
A recent survey of UM faculty revealed that maintaining academic integrity is the primary concern of respondents when it comes to AI in education. With tools like Copilot and ChatGPT being widely used, there’s a clear need for thoughtful adaptation of assessment practices.
The session emphasized several practical approaches for integrating AI into course assessments and provided colleagues with opportunities for sharing their insights and experiences. One key takeaway was the importance of clear communication about AI usage policies in course syllabi, with a majority of faculty already implementing such statements.
Prof. Katrine Wong introduced various assessment strategies that encourage meaningful engagement with AI while maintaining academic rigor and facilitated small group discussions. The assessment strategies that were shared and discussed include:
- Performance-based assessments using real-world tasks and case studies
- Formative assessments providing ongoing feedback throughout the course
- Reflective practice encouraging students to develop metacognitive skills
- Peer and self-assessment opportunities to enhance critical thinking
A part of the forum focused on prompt writing for AI systems, introducing three approaches: conversational prompts for quick brainstorming, iterative prompts for exploring complex topics, and structured prompts for generating specific outputs. Dr. Chris Fulton’s part emphasized the importance of creating opportunities for collaborative learning activities, with or without AI, and evaluating AI output not just for accuracy, but also for relevance and bias.
This forum provided opportunities for educators to discuss and navigate the changing landscape of academic assessment, emphasizing that while AI presents challenges, it also offers opportunities for innovation in teaching and learning practices.
