UM students participated in the Chinese writing and short video competition organized by the Macao SAR Government and the Liaison Office of the Central People’s Government in the Macao SAR and received outstanding results in the tertiary student category. 14 students winning multiple awards, showcasing our students’ understanding of national security and the mission of the new generation to protect their motherland.

Zhang Wentao, a student from the Faculty of Education, Ma Man Kei and Lo Pak Sam College, received the first prize in the writing competition for his profound insights and excellent writing skills, which is the highest distinction of this competition. Additionally, one student received the second prize, while three students received distinction awards.

In the short video competition, the team “樂隊” from Shiu Pong College (members: Cheang Ka Keong, Chen Xiangyi, Song Yanyou, Fan Zou Chen, Li Xiang) won the first prize for their creative work; another team, “你我都是主角,” also secured the third prize. (The full list of awardees is shown below.)

Zhang Wentao, mentioned that his writing was inspired by the book of Zheng Guanying (《盛世危言》). During President Xi Jinping visit to UM in 2014, he referenced this book, and its concepts inspired modern revolutionary efforts, which encouraging Zhang to research it further. His writing emphasizes harmony and unity, which aligns with Macau’s socially distinctive trait of multicultural integration, such as the Nezha Temple (哪吒庙) is located close to the Ruins of St. Paul’s (大三巴牌坊), reflecting the peaceful interaction between Chinese and Western cultures. Zhang expressed deep concern regarding the Macau SAR government’s efforts to implement National Security.

Chen Xiangyi revealed that the video featured a grandfather writing to his grandson, inspired by the grandfather’s reflections on the Anti-Extradition Law Movement in Hong Kong, and aimed to persuade the grandson to prioritize social security. The idea came from his personal habit of exchanging letters with his father, and he believes that young people should pay more attention to global events. Participating in the competition allowed the team members to deepen their understanding of historical events while also gaining the benefits of honor and knowledge.

During the opening ceremony of the “National Security Education Exhibition” on April 15, the Chief Executive personally awarded the prizes to the winning teachers and students. This competition attracted participation from 8 universities and 48 secondary schools, with over 25,000 students joining. It serves not only as a platform for creative competition but also guides young people to reflect on the relationship between social security and personal development, infusing national security education with youthful energy.
