Henry Fok Pearl Jubilee College of University of Macau and Grey College of Durham University Co-hosted Online Cross-Cultural Handicraft Workshop

In alignment with the University of Macau’s global development strategy, Henry Fok Pearl Jubilee College (hereinafter as “HFPJC”) has been actively expanding its international collaborations with overseas institutions. Following the visit by the College Master Professor Hui Sai Chuen Stanley to Grey College of Durham University last October, the two Colleges recently co-organized a unique online handicraft workshop featuring traditional Chinese paper-cutting art and western Easter egg decoration, fostering cultural exchange between the East and the West.

The event commenced with welcoming speeches by Professor Hui Sai Chuen and Professor Sonia Virdee, the Principle of Grey College, both expressing their aspirations for deepening cooperation between the two Colleges. Subsequently, Ms. Qi Zizheng, Resident Tutor from HFPJC, provided a detailed introduction to the history and cultural significance of Chinese paper-cutting, demonstrating step-by-step folding and cutting techniques that guided participants in creating exquisite paper-cut artworks. Then Dr. Judith Barbaro-Brown, the Assistant Principal of Grey College, shared Easter traditions, explained the symbolism of decorated eggs, and presented various festive desserts, allowing participants to experience the unique charm of Western culture.

During the workshop, students from both Colleges enthusiastically engaged in creating paper-cuts and decorating Easter eggs, with frequent interactions and continuous laughter throughout the session. The online exchange not only enhanced mutual understanding of Eastern and Western traditional cultures, but also strengthened the friendly ties between the two Colleges. Jennifer, a HFPJC student from Mozambique, shared: “As an international student, having the opportunity to learn traditional Chinese paper-cutting while exchanging knowledge about Easter culture with British peers is an exceptionally valuable experience. I particularly enjoyed the paper-cutting process, which not only tested my patience but also allowed me to appreciate the wisdom of Chinese folk art.”

This event marks a significant step in Henry Fok Pearl Jubilee College’s efforts to promote international exchange. HFPJC will continue to develop diverse collaborations with overseas partners, providing more cross-cultural learning opportunities for both teachers and students. These initiatives will further implement the global development vision of the University of Macau while enhancing students’ international perspectives and global competitiveness.
