Application Mistakes to Avoid When Applying for Postgraduate Programmes

In order to determine who is the “lucky” applicant, universities have always followed several procedures to help them select the best candidates from hundreds of excellent applicants. In today’s article, we have summarised four important tips that may help you to know more about how to prepare for a “good application”.

  • Choose Your Targets Wisely

After considering everything from university rankings to the academic atmosphere, it is easy for students to forget that they are the main protagonists in the application process. Don’t forget to analyze both your strengths and weaknesses before making your wishlist. Be selective about the programme that can best maximize your strengths.

  •  Spend Time Reviewing Admission Requirements

Once you have completed your wish list, it is time to check the entry requirements. Do they have minimum IELTS, TOEFL, GRE or GMAT scores? Do they offer early application rounds, which may be more advantageous? Give yourself plenty of time to research programmes and you will be less stressed during the application season.

  • Personalize Your Materials, Show Who You Are

To make your application more personal, make sure your experience is relevant to what each university is looking for. Instead of brainstorming another fancy word to put in your personal statement, think deeply about your unique achievement first and what makes you different from the other people in the same application pool.

  • Resume and Letter of Recommendation Matter

Resume and letter of recommendation show who you are beyond the numbers on your transcript. As the first glimpse of your overall profile, your resume should be short, concise and in line with the application requirements. As for the letter of recommendation, these more objective documents give the admissions committee a better understanding of you. Not to mention the importance of finding the right recommender who knows you well and can truly speak about you, especially if they have a higher reputation in a particular field.

The admissions committee is looking for students who have the potential to succeed in their studies. Therefore, the admission application is a mutual selection between you and the university, be patient and authentic and you will eventually find your destination. Good luck!
