Call for Applications
Harvard-Yenching Institute Visiting Scholars Program 2026–2027
Dear Colleagues,
Greetings from the Institute of Advanced Studies in Humanities and Social Sciences (IAS)!
We are pleased to announce that the Harvard-Yenching Institute (HYI) Visiting Scholars Program for the academic year August 2026 to May 2027 is now open for applications. Since last year, the University of Macau has been invited to participate in this prestigious program as a partner university, and the IAS has been entrusted with coordinating the internal selection of candidates and liaising with the HYI. This program offers faculty members to undertake 10 months of study and research at Harvard University and/or other appropriate universities. UM may nominate up to four candidates from among our arts and humanities-related faculties (FAH, FBA, FED, FLL and FSS). Selected scholars must be available for the full duration of this fellowship, which runs from August 2026 to May 2027. Please find below the key information regarding the program’s timeline, eligibility, leave and subsidy arrangement and application details.

2. Eligibility Criteria
- Applicants must be full-time faculty members with at least three years of service before 1 August 2023.
- Scholars who obtained their PhD from an institution outside of Asia within the past five years (after 2021) are not eligible.
- Previous HYI Visiting Scholar Fellowship recipients are not eligible to reapply. However, former recipients of the HYI Doctoral Scholarship, Visiting Fellowships, or Training Program Fellowships are eligible.
- Candidates’ research fields must fall within the humanities and social sciences.

4. Leave and Subsidy Arrangements
- To help maintain teaching capacity within faculties, we kindly suggest that applicants, where applicable, consider utilizing their existing sabbatical leave quota to participate in the program. In cases where the selected applicant is not eligible for sabbatical leave, special approval may be sought under the University’s leave guidelines.
- Subsidy and Support – HYI will provide a generous stipend and support package that includes:

- Round-trip economy class airfare
- A monthly stipend of USD 7,725 (for 10 months)
- Health insurance (up to USD 5,500)
- Additional funding (up to USD 5,000) for hiring a research assistant/editor, attending academic conferences, or undertaking short research trips within North America
