Abstract:
Significant warming in recent decades has heightened the susceptibility of High Mountain Asia to climate change, triggering a rise in glacier cascading hazards. A pressing concern is the destabilization and sudden detachment of massive debris-ice sediments on valley floors. These events initiate long-runout cascading hazards, including avalanches, debris flows, and floods, directly endangering downstream infrastructure and communities. This seminar will talk and discuss three key questions: How to predict climate-driven glacier movements? What governs the propagation, transformation, and volume amplification in hazard chains—from glacier detachments to debris floods? What risks do these cascading hazards pose to cryosphere river systems? By examining The Yarlung Tsangpo Grand Canyon, we aim to enhance understanding of glacier-related risks and inform sustainable hydropower development in high-mountain cryosphere.
Speaker’s Bio:
Dr. Ruochen Jiang is a postdoctoral research fellow in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology.
