Computational Social Sciences Workshop: From Digital Traces to Causal Inference: Evidence from Two Commercial Video Games

Speaker: Prof. Mingxuan Liu, Assistant Professor, Department of Communication, Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Macau
Date: 22/10/2025 (Wed)

Abstract:

Making causal inferences about human behavior is challenging: certain treatments, such as crises, cannot be experimentally manipulated, while disruptive behaviors are difficult to capture in lab settings when participants know they are being observed. Online multiplayer video games provide a valuable opportunity to overcome these barriers, offering naturalistic environments and rich behavioral data for causal inference. This talk presents two studies that illustrate these possibilities. Study 1 examines the coevolution of social networks and toxic behavior in the online multiplayer game World of Tanks. Study 2 examines prosocial behavior in times of crisis. Together, these studies highlight the potential of online games as research contexts for making causal inference from unobtrusively collected digital trace data and for advancing our understanding of human behavior.

For participants who have registered and attended the workshop, Smart Point / CS will be given as “Knowledge Integration”.
