CKLC Student Represents Macau’s Only Undergraduate at UN CSW70 Parallel Session

During the 70th Session of the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women (CSW70) held at the UN Headquarters in New York, the Macau Women’s General Association and the Macau Association for International Affairs Exchange and Training jointly hosted an online parallel session focusing on Macau today (March 18). Under the theme “Beyond Boundaries: Macau Youth Integrating Global Agendas and Deepening Local Contributions”, the session explored how youth engagement and local practices can align with international efforts.
Xue Hecheng, a Year 1 undergraduate student from Cheong Kun Lun College, University of Macau, was invited to speak as the sole undergraduate representative from Macau. He shared his team’s innovative practices in advancing sustainable development on campus. Xue serves as the team leader of the champion team in the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) Knowledge Integration Project Competition organized by Cheong Kun Lun College. Together with his fellow Year 1 students Cheong Sui Ian (Statistics and Data Science) and Ku Meng In (Electrical and Mechanical Engineering), they formed an interdisciplinary team. Addressing points such as inconvenient campus mobility, reduced student interaction, and growing demand for low-carbon living, the team successfully developed and launched the Shared Tandem Bicycle platform.
In his presentation, Xue elaborated on how the project translates the ambitious UN Sustainable Development Goals into concrete and actionable initiatives on campus. He emphasized that the shared tandem bicycle is more than a means of transportation; it is a tangible platform for university students to understand and implement the SDGs. The project integrates multiple SDGs: promoting physical and mental well-being through tandem riding SDG 3: Good Health and Well-being), building a friendlier campus micro-community with green, quiet transportation (SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities), achieving zero carbon emissions to combat climate change (SDG 13: Climate Action) and demonstrating multi-stakeholder collaboration among the college, mentors, and students (SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals).
“Small problems around us, when addressed with an SDG mindset, can become youth actions of global significance,” Xue shared. He noted that he is from Hebei and had little exposure to international issues during high school. It was through the SDG competition at Cheong Kun Lun College that he truly broadened his global vision. With funding support and professional guidance from college tutors, he taught himself web development from scratch, leading his team to integrate a booking system, GPS hardware tracking, software technology, and a real-time allocation system to bring the project to fruition.

Cheong Kun Lun College has long been committed to nurturing young leaders with global competitiveness and a strong sense of social responsibility. Through its SDG Knowledge Integration Project Competition covering both proposal design and project implementation, the college encourages students to apply classroom knowledge to solve real-world challenges aligned with the UN SDGs. It provides comprehensive support including funding, professional mentorship, and practical platforms to foster students’ innovative thinking and hands-on capabilities Xue’s appearance on the international stage of the UN parallel session not only showcases the social responsibility and innovative capacity of Macau’s contemporary youth but also affirms the college’s outstanding achievements in advancing knowledge integration and holistic education. By connecting global issues with local action, Macau’s youth are contributing to a better world through tangible efforts.
The online parallel session attracted active participation and interaction from many local youth and organizations, further strengthening ties between Macau and the international community. The organizers hope to continue expanding Macau youth’s global vision through such platforms, encouraging more young people to leverage their professional strengths and share the stories of China’s Macau on the world stage.
