On 25 Mar, CTLE held a professional development event on active learning for large classes in an AI-mediated world. Nearly 60 UM academic staff attended the event.
In this practical 90-minute workshop, Prof. Sean McMinn from the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) explored how to engage students in large classes in today’s AI-mediated world.
Prof. McMinn began by asking participants what they consider “large class”. He then explained that classroom design greatly affects student behaviours. He demonstrated a few easy-to-use active learning strategies that work well in traditional lecture theatres and flexible classrooms with movable furniture. Key techniques included structured polling cycles with Mentimeter (question → individual thinking → group discussion → share results → class discussion), the funneling approach, and digital whiteboards for collaboration and real-time feedback.
Prof. McMinn also spoke about the importance of Self-Regulated Learning (SRL) and metacognition (thinking about one’s own thinking). He warned that students are increasingly dependent on AI for answers and decision-making, which may weaken their independent thinking, judgment and ability to monitor their learning.
Through hands-on activities, participants experienced how simple digital tools can help students plan, monitor and reflect on their learning while using AI. The workshop ended with a short Q&A session.

工作坊上,來自香港科技大學的 Sean McMinn 教授探討了在現今 AI 盛行的環境下,如何提升大班教學的學生參與度。
McMinn 教授先請與會者定義何謂「大班」,並解釋課室設計如何影響學生行為。他示範了幾種易上手的主動學習策略,無論是在傳統演講廳式教室,還是靈活的互動教室中皆能有效運用。
他也分享了關鍵教學技巧,包括利用 Mentimeter投票工具進行大班教學,並 遵循「提問 → 個人思考 → 小組討論 → 分享結果 → 全班討論」的流程。他也使用漏斗式引導法循序漸進地引導學生深入思考,並使用智能白板, 用於協作與即時回饋。
教授也強調了自我調節學習和元認知(對思考的再思考)的重要性。他提醒學生日益依賴 AI 尋求答案與決策,可能會削弱其獨立思考、判斷以及監測自身學習進度的能力。
在互動實踐環節上,同事們親身體驗了如何利用簡單的科技工具,幫助學生在運用 AI 的同時,仍能有效地規劃、監測與反思自己的學習過程。工作坊最後以簡短的問答環節圓滿結束。
