UM Henry Fok Pearl Jubilee College “The Fok’s Singers” Visits Hong Kong
Four Colleges’ Choirs Share the Stage, Broadening Humanistic and Scientific Horizons

A 31-member delegation of the University of Macau’s Henry Fok Pearl Jubilee College (HFPJC) “The Fok’s Singers,” led by College Master Prof. Hui Sai Chuen, visited The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) from March 27 to 28 for a two-day, one‑night exchange. On the first day, the ensemble performed alongside CUHK’s Lee Woo Sing College (LWSC) Choir, The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen (CUHK-Shenzhen) Diligentia College Choir, and Grey College Choir of Durham University (UK). On the second day, students from the four colleges jointly visited the Hong Kong Science Museum and undertook a city cultural exploration, expanding their academic and artistic horizons at the intersection of music, the humanities, and technology.

Upon arriving at CUHK on the afternoon of March 27, the Fok’s Singers immediately joined the other choirs for rehearsals to ensure the best possible presentation for the evening’s joint concert. That night, the four choirs performed together, featuring a repertoire spanning Chinese and Western classics as well as contemporary choral works. The programme showcased refined multi-part counterpoint and the emotional expressiveness of pieces in both Chinese and English, forging friendships through music. The theme of the Annual LWSC Choir Concert that evening was “Melody of Memories.” Choirs from four colleges joined together in performance, presenting a repertoire that spanned both Chinese and Western classics as well as contemporary choral works. The program showcased delicate polyphonic textures and conveyed the emotional depth of pieces performed in multiple languages, forging connections through music. Each college choir demonstrated its unique strengths by performing well-known selections. The Fok’s Singers performed three renowned pieces, including the famous Korean folk song “Arirang” sung in Korean, and a song-and-dance rendition of the movie hit “Try Everything” together with students from Grey College, Durham University. Under the baton of the College’s Honorary Conductor, Ms. Ruth Chung, the four choirs—comprising more than one hundred singers—also joined together in a stirring performance of the classic “Why We Sing.” The concert was met with thunderous applause from the audience, with its resonance lingering long after the final note.

The following day, students from the four colleges visited the Hong Kong Science Museum to experience interactive science exhibits from an interdisciplinary perspective. They then embarked on a city cultural exploration, visiting neighborhoods and cultural landmarks to learn about Hong Kong’s diverse historical context and urban aesthetics. The group returned to Macao in the evening.

Prof. Hui Sai Chuen, College Master of HFPJC, stated that the College will continue to expand artistic and academic exchanges with institutions in the Guangdong–Hong Kong–Macao Greater Bay Area and overseas, encouraging students to use choral music as a medium to enrich their humanistic literacy and broaden their international outlook.

Chan Si Chi, HFPJC student and Vice-Captain of the Fok’s Singers, said: “This is my second year to join the annual concert, we pushed our boundaries this time, performing and dancing ‘Try Everything’ together with students from Durham University. It truly realized a cross-border ‘making friends through song.’ We look forward to meeting again next year to continue this wonderful musical bond!”

This event not only deepened participants’ appreciation for the art of choral singing, but also cultivated communication, collaboration, and stage practice skills through cross-regional and cross-cultural cooperation. Music serves as a bridge connecting friendship and values, and is also an important vehicle for advancing liberal education.
