IOTSC TALK SERIES: Radio positioning, mapping, and SLAM

Dear Colleagues and Students,
The State Key Laboratory of Internet of Things for Smart City would like to invite you to join our “IOTSC Talk Series” on 28/04/2026 (Tuesday). We are pleased to invite Dr. Yu GE from Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) as the speaker.
Radio positioning, mapping, and SLAM
Speaker: Dr. Yu GE
Date: 28/04/2026 (Tuesday)
Time: 16:30 – 17:30
Language: English
Venue: N21-6007
Abstract:
In this talk, I will focus on radio-based positioning, mapping, and simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM). I will begin with a brief overview of the problem formulation and underlying models, followed by a discussion of key challenges in radio SLAM. I will then introduce our approach based on random finite set (RFS) theory, which offers a principled framework for addressing these challenges. Beyond this, I will outline several promising research directions, including extended target modeling, multi-bounce path exploitation, and cooperative SLAM and sensing. To illustrate these ideas, I will present case studies from our recent work in both theoretical development and experimental validation.
Speaker’s Bio:
Yu Ge received his B.E. degree from Zhejiang University in 2017, his M.Sc. degree from KTH Royal Institute of Technology in 2019, and his Ph.D. degree from Chalmers University of Technology in 2024. He is currently a Postdoctoral Fellow with the Research Laboratory of Electronics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). His research interests focus on integrated sensing and communication (ISAC), wireless localization systems, and simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM), with particular emphasis on 5G and beyond 5G technologies. To date, he has authored or co-authored over 50 IEEE journal and conference papers, contributed to 3 book chapters, gave 3 tutorials at different IEEE conferences, and holds 2 US patents. He also received the ‘FUSION 2021 Best Paper’ award. Yu has played a key role in multiple European Union and Swedish-funded research projects. His academic service record included serving as reviewer for various IEEE journals, and as a session chair and/or a TPC member for major IEEE conferences and workshops.
