FST Hosts Distinguished Talk on the New Era of Smart Living Driven by IoT and AI

The Faculty of Science and Technology (FST) at the University of Macau successfully held the “Distinguished Talk of Faculty of Science and Technology” today (30 April 2026), inviting internationally renowned scholar Prof. Sajal K. Das, Curators’ Distinguished Professor at the Missouri University of Science and Technology, as the keynote speaker. The lecture attracted nearly a hundred teachers and students from the Department of Computer and Information Science and the State Key Laboratory of Internet of Things for Smart City, fully reflecting the academic community’s widespread attention and cross-disciplinary interest in the integration of the Internet of Things (IoT), artificial intelligence, and data science.

As part of the celebrations for the 45th Anniversary of the University of Macau and the FST “1 to 3 and Beyond” series, Prof. Das delivered a talk titled “From Smart Sensing to Smart Living: The Era of IoT, AI/ML and Data Science.” He provided an in-depth exploration of the challenges and innovative solutions facing today’s smart environments. He pointed out that with the rapid development of smart devices, sensors, drones, edge computing, and AI/ML technologies, physical and cyber environments are becoming increasingly intertwined, giving rise to diverse application scenarios such as smart homes, smart cities, smart healthcare, and precision agriculture. However, these systems still face significant challenges in terms of scale, complexity, heterogeneity, uncertainty, and security.

In his speech, Prof. Das proposed a series of innovative approaches based on AI/ML algorithms, time-series data analytics, sensor fusion, uncertainty reasoning, information theory, and game theory. He also presented experimental results from real-world case studies covering smart energy, transportation, water distribution networks, healthcare, and agriculture. He emphasized that future research should focus on building resilient, secure, and trustworthy smart living systems, and called for stronger cross-disciplinary collaboration between academia and industry to jointly promote technological implementation and social value.

The seminar was hosted by Prof. Cheng-Zhong Xu, Dean of FST. The Q&A session was highly interactive, with students raising in-depth questions regarding system scalability, data privacy protection, and cross-platform integration. Prof. Das received high praise from the audience for translating complex technical concepts into accessible content through clear logic and vivid examples. Prof. Das is currently a Curators’ Distinguished Professor and holds the Daniel St. Clair Endowed Chair in Computer Science at the Missouri University of Science and Technology. His research spans IoT, AI, data science, cybersecurity, and edge computing. He is a Fellow of IEEE, the National Academy of Inventors (NAI), and the Asia-Pacific Artificial Intelligence Association (AAIA). This event highlights FST’s ongoing commitment to promoting international academic exchange and cultivating technological talents with a global vision and cross-disciplinary integration capabilities, injecting new momentum into the development of smart technologies in the Greater Bay Area.
