UM Mathematics Department Achieves Excellent Results in the 17th Chinese Mathematics Competitions

The Department of Mathematics at the Faculty of Science and Technology, University of Macau (UM), has achieved remarkable success in the 17th Chinese Mathematics Competitions (CMC). Not only did numerous students win First and Third Prizes, but their supervising professor, Prof. Liu Zhi, was also honored with the title of “Excellent Instructor of the Guangdong Mathematics Competition” for three consecutive years due to his outstanding teaching achievements.

The Chinese Mathematics Competitions (CMC) is a national high-level academic competition organized by the Chinese Mathematical Society, aiming to provide young students with a platform to showcase their fundamental mathematical skills and thinking abilities. In the Guangdong regional preliminary round held in November 2025, nine students from UM—six from the Department of Mathematics and three from the Department of Computer and Information Science—distinguished themselves.

Among them, Lei Wai In (Year 2), Cao Yuchen (Year 3), and Lao Un (Year 1) won the First Prize in Mathematics Major Category A, Mathematics Major Category B, and Non-Mathematics Category A, respectively. Additionally, six other students were awarded the Third Prize. All winning students were under the dedicated guidance of Prof. Liu Zhi.

Notably, in addition to winning the First Prize in Category A, master’s student Lei Wai In was successfully recommended to represent the region in the national finals held in Sichuan in April 2026, demonstrating the top-tier strength of UM students in the field of mathematics. Meanwhile, Prof. Liu Zhi received this honor for the third consecutive year for his exceptional mentoring capabilities and continuous contributions, fully highlighting his profound expertise and outstanding accomplishments in the field of mathematics education.

The Department of Mathematics at UM has always been deeply committed to academic research, placing great importance on cultivating students’ mathematical literacy and practical application skills. Through the establishment of academic organizations and research platforms managed jointly by faculty and students, the department coordinates and hosts academic lectures, skills training, and disciplinary competitions, helping students deeply integrate theoretical knowledge with practical application. In addition to the CMC, the department actively organizes student participation in various high-level competitions, such as the Mathematical Contest in Modeling (MCM/ICM) and the Contemporary Undergraduate Mathematical Contest in Modeling (CUMCM), comprehensively promoting the improvement of students’ academic abilities and overall quality.
