The English Co-Curricular Activities Committee  (ECAC) of the English Language Centre (ELC) hosted 4 student activities this semester led by the ELC academic staff.  The series of workshops was started by “Rice, the Heart of Traditions” led by ELC Senior Instructor Mr. Mark Wong on 21 January 2026. The workshop unfolded in five engaging parts, beginning with Mr. Wong’s introduction of rice-related sayings in different languages, which encouraged students to share expressions from their own cultures. Participants then viewed a video showcasing rice variety, their culinary uses, and cultural significance worldwide, followed by a lively team quiz. The session continued with cross-cultural idiom discussions that sparked meaningful exchanges and concluded with students sampling rice-based snacks from around the globe, capturing the spirit of shared traditions, and offering a flavorful finale that embodied cultural appreciation and shared traditions.

This was followed by “Thinking Clearly with Critical Thinking” by ELC Visiting Instructor Ms. Anh Le.   She opened the session with a thought-provoking question that prompted students to compare scenarios and engage in active group discussion, before guiding them through additional situations commonly encountered in their studies and daily lives to encourage deeper reflection. The highly interactive workshop included drawing, character-guessing exercises, and in-depth discussions, all designed to challenge students to apply critical-thinking techniques in creative and meaningful ways. By the end of the session, participants felt mentally energized and equipped with valuable strategies to approach their academic work and future challenges with greater clarity and confidence, with attendance spanning both undergraduate and postgraduate students from various faculties.

On 18 March 2026, ELC Visiting Instructor Mr. Michael Gilmore, hosted the Happy Saint Patrick’s Day Workshop, offering students an engaging platform to learn about Ireland and the culture behind St. Patrick’s Day. Mr. Gilmore began with an introduction to the holiday’s history before exploring Irish culture through language, music, dance, sport, and literature. In the language segment, he discussed Gaelic and the unique features of Irish English like the greeting “Any craic?” meaning “What’s up?”.  Mr. Gilmore also showed lively videos showcasing traditional instruments in Irish music and footwork in Irish dance. Popular sports such as hurling and Gaelic football were introduced, followed by a discussion of Ireland’s literary achievements. The workshop concluded with a pub quiz style competition.

To conclude the semester, students participated in the “Interview Skills to Get You IN the Job” hosted by ELC Instructor Mr. Alan Chan.  The workshop provided a structured and practical approach to interview preparation, beginning with students responding to “yes” or “no” questions about common interview scenarios to build awareness of appropriate behaviors. This was followed by exercises that challenged participants to develop thoughtful answers to unusual or unexpected interview questions, fostering adaptability and critical thinking. The session concluded with mock interviews, giving students the opportunity to practice realistic interview situations, apply newly learned strategies, and receive constructive feedback. Overall, the workshop offered a comprehensive learning experience that equipped students with valuable skills and greater confidence to navigate future job interviews successfully.

Through these workshops, students not only enhanced their English proficiency but also gained valuable preparation for job interviews, strengthened their critical thinking skills, and deepened their understanding of diverse cultures. Their enthusiastic participation reflected a commitment to cultural engagement and global competitiveness.  The workshops drew undergraduate and postgraduate participants from various faculties.

The semester concluded with a year-end gathering honoring the Student Ambassadors for their valuable contributions to ECAC activities. In appreciation of their dedication and hard work, they were presented with well-deserved certificates of recognition. The event marked a warm and meaningful close to a fruitful and productive academic year, while also serving as a positive welcome to the new challenges, learning opportunities, and workshops awaiting in the coming academic year.
