Best Paper Award (Chen Jiahang and Lam Lam)

Mr. Jiahang Chen, a doctoral student, Mr. Yifan Yang, a doctoral student, and Ms. Lam Lam, a master student, from the Department of Electromechanical Engineering (EME), Faculty of Science and Technology (FST), University of Macau (UM), have won the best paper awards at the 5th International Symposium on Thermal-Fluid Dynamics (ISTFD 2024), which was hosted by Xi’an Jiaotong University (XJTU). Experts at the symposium fully recognized the effort and achievement of the research team of UM. This year’s symposium gathered over a hundred scholars and researchers from around the world, featuring more than 100 oral and poster presentations, 9 plenary lectures, and 20 thematic lectures, all led by distinguished researchers in the field of thermal fluids, showcasing the most advanced knowledge and technology in the domain.

In the symposium, Mr. Jiahang Chen represented the research group to present a paper titled “Experimental Investigation of Pressure Drop and Heat Transfer Characteristics of 3D-Printed Mini Tubes using Different Fabrication Parameters”. As an advanced manufacturing technology, Selective Laser Melting (SLM) 3D printing technique, which was one of the additive manufacturing methods, could be used to print sophisticated and small-sized heat exchangers with large heat transfer areas so it has attracted high attention in the thermal engineering community in recent years. Due to the differences in inside wall surface characteristics between 3D-printed tubes and traditional tubes, the research team experimentally compared the pressure drop and heat transfer characteristics of 3D-printed stainless-steel tubes under different fabrication parameters. The results showed that the friction factors and heat transfer coefficients of the 3D-printed tube were directly affected by different printing parameters.

Ms. Lam Lam represented the group to present a paper titled “Experimental Investigation on Heat Transfer and Pressure Drop Characteristics of 3D Printed Tubes with Semicircular and Round-edge Semicircular Channels”. A pair of semicircular channels and rounded semicircular channels were manufactured by 3D printing methods to imitate the different channels in printed circuit heat exchangers (PCHE). The pressure drop of the two tubes was measured and compared under isothermal and uniform heat flux boundary conditions. The research results of this study provide a fundamental understanding of the semicircular channel with or without round-edge inside the PCHE.

The two research projects were supervised by Prof. Lam Mou Tam, Professor of Department of EME. Mr. Jiahang Chen’s research project is sponsored by the Science and Technology Development Fund (FDCT) and the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC). Ms. Lam Lam’s research project is sponsored by the Macao Science and Technology Development Fund (FDCT) and the Ministry of Science and Technology of the People’s Republic of China (MOST).

UM Ph. D. graduate Jingzhang Sun received the 2024 JNC Best Technical Paper Award

A former Ph. D. graduate of the Biomedical Imaging Laboratory (BIG) from the Faculty of Science and Technology at the University of Macau, Jingzhang Sun, received the best technical paper award of the Journal of Nuclear Cardiology (JNC) at the 29th Annual Meeting of the American Society of Nuclear Cardiology (ASNC), held in Austin, Texas, US. ASNC, the world’s largest and most specialized academic association in nuclear cardiology, selects one exceptional technical paper published in JNC from hundreds of submissions worldwide each year.

The awarded study, entitled “Deep Learning-Based Denoising in Projection-Domain and Reconstruction-Domain for Low-Dose Myocardial Perfusion SPECT”, was led by Prof. Greta Mok from FST, collaborated with Taipei Veterans General Hospital and Yale University. This work demonstrates that using deep learning techniques in denoising in the projection domain (raw data) is superior to the denoising in the reconstruction domain (processed data) for myocardial perfusion single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT), a well-established method for diagnosing coronary artery disease yet with radiation concern. This study demonstrates the state-of-the-art deep learning-based denoising performance for SPECT, which can be translated to reduced ionizing radiation to patients and medical staff, as well as shortened scan time to increase patient throughput and enhanced patients’ comfort.

BIG is one of the world-leading teams in applying deep learning techniques in SPECT, with strong emphasis on clinical translation. This study was supported by the first Excellent Young Scientists Fund (Hong Kong and Macau) from the National Natural Science Foundation of China (81922080).

The First Graduate of the Greater Bay Area University Joint Programme – Tam Chi Fong’s Cross-Border Academic Journey

2024-09-10T14:56:18+08:00

The first successful case of the joint programme

Tam Chi Fong is a graduate of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering of the University of Macau (UM) and the first graduate of the ” 2+2 Joint Programme” between UM and South China University of Technology (SCUT). As the first successful case of the joint programme, his experience marks a new phase in higher education cooperation within the Greater Bay Area, highlighting the potential for cross-institutional and cross-border collaboration among universities in the region. Tam’s success story will inspire more young students aspiring to develop in the Greater Bay Area.

Initiating the Academic Path in the Greater Bay Area

Tam ‘s academic journey began with an accidental discovery. During high school, he learned about this joint programme through a TV show. Students could earn bachelor’s degrees from two prestigious universities by studying civil engineering subjects at UM for two years and then completing another two-year civil engineering program at SCUT, all within four years. The curriculum leverages the strengths of both institutions and is specifically tailored to nurture talent for the Greater Bay Area. The joint programme not only broadens horizons but also allows students to deeply understand the cultural atmosphere and educational environment of both Macao and Mainland China, which was a significant attraction for him. “I felt that such an opportunity was rare, allowing me to obtain two degrees while experiencing firsthand the development trends of the Greater Bay Area,” said Tam.

Broadening Horizons, Moving Forward Boldly

When asked about the greatest advantage of the programme, Tam noted that it allowed him to experience mainland living styles and learning environments, broadening his horizons while enhancing his capabilities in all aspects. Especially after the pandemic, he had the chance to visit core enterprises and construction sites in the Greater Bay Area, engaging with industry experts, thus gaining a deeper understanding of the future direction of the industry. “These experiences made me even more certain about my future direction because I saw the immense potential for the development of the Greater Bay Area.” Tam said. As the first graduate of the programme, Tam faced many challenges, particularly regarding curriculum design and credit arrangements. “The biggest challenge was being the first participant, so there were some unforeseen difficulties in practical implementation.”  He said. However, these challenges honed his problem-solving skills. “I learned to take the initiative in solving problems, communicating situations with professors from both universities, and ultimately successfully resolved many issues.” These experiences greatly benefited him and made him more independent and confident.

Cultural Integration, Language Enhancement

During his studies at SCUT, Tam not only improved his Mandarin proficiency but also deeply felt the differences in teaching methods in Mainland China. “Courses on the mainland focus more on practical operations, while UM provides more tutoring, such as study sessions led by Teaching Assistants.” He added that although there were subtle cultural differences between the two places, overall, these experiences were very beneficial. Currently, Tam is pursuing a master’s degree in Civil and Environmental Engineering at UM. For the future, Tam hopes to become an engineer who can serve as a bridge for cooperation between the two places. He plans to obtain an engineering license and accumulate work experience in Macao before developing further in the Greater Bay Area.

The Significance of Cross-Institutional and Cross-Border Collaboration

Tam believes that such cross-institutional and cross-border collaboration programmes are significant for students, providing them with a new platform for learning and growth while promoting closer exchanges and cooperation among universities within the Greater Bay Area, driving regional coordinated development. For juniors interested in participating in the joint programme, Tam summarized several pieces of advice, “First, possess a certain level of Chinese language ability, which is crucial for successfully completing your studies; second, be prepared mentally to face various challenges, maintaining a proactive attitude; finally, plan your time reasonably to ensure you can complete all courses on schedule.” Through Tam’s successful example, universities in the Greater Bay Area will continue to deepen their cooperation, fostering talents suitable for the region. With his spirit of courage and perseverance, Tam Chi Fong has written his own splendid chapter. This is not only a testament to personal growth but also a model of successful educational cooperation in the Greater Bay Area.

University of Macau is a Pivotal Starting Point in Life

Dr. Sio Hon Pan, the Curator of the Macao Science Centre, graduated from the Faculty of Science and Technology (FST) at the University of Macau (UM), where he studied in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (formerly the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering) in 1998. He holds a Master of Laws and a Ph.D. in Data Science. He is a licensed government engineer, a member of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (MRICS) in the United Kingdom, and a professional mediator in the International Commercial Mediation of the China International Economic and Trade Arbitration Commission. He has been recognized with prestigious accolades such as being named one of the “top ten outstanding youth of guangfu people in the world” and receiving “the 2nd national innovation pioneer award”.

Dr. Sio also has extensive experience in planning and managing large-scale venue facilities. After graduating, he participated in several major projects, including the Coloane Power Plant B, the Macau University of Science and Technology, the Government Harbor Building, and the Government Headquarters. From 2002 to 2007, he joined the Macao Organizing Committee of the East Asian Games and was involved in the main work of the 4th East Asian Games, the Lusophone Games, and the 2nd Asian Indoor Games. During this period, he was responsible for planning, coordinating construction, and managing the operation of several large venues, including the Macau Polytechnic Institute Sports Hall, the Macau International Shooting Center, the Bowling Center, and the Tennis School. He also served as the first director of the Macao East Asian Games Dome and the director of Macao Olympic Aquatic Center. Since assuming the role of the Curator of Macao Science Center in 2012, Dr. Sio has consistently driven the center to actively promote scientific popularization activities not only in Macau but also in Mainland China and various other countries, achieving remarkable results.

In an exclusive interview with FST, Dr. Sio reflected on how his university education significantly influenced his career development. He expressed his heartfelt gratitude, stating, “I sincerely thank UM, especially FST, for providing me with the opportunity to study electrical and electronic engineering.
