Boya Book Launch : “The EU Artificial Intelligence Act Regulating Subliminal AI Systems”/ Prof. Rostam J. Neuwirth

2023-03-20T00:00:26+08:00

The Boya Book Launch – “The EU Artificial Intelligence Act Regulating Subliminal AI Systems” was successfully held on February 17 at the Auditorium, University Gallery (E1). Professor Rostam J. NEUWIRTH, Head of the Department of Global Legal Studies of FLL, was invited to share insights on his new book publication entitled “The EU Artificial Intelligence Act Regulating Subliminal AI Systems”. Professor Xingzhong YU, Director of IAS and Chair Professor of the Department of Global Legal Studies of FLL, was invited to moderate the talk.

Professor Neuwirth first introduced the term artificial intelligence as an oxymoron from the perspective of the psychology of intelligence. Intelligence, by nature, cannot be artificial and its inestimable complexity defies any notion of artificiality. He then discussed the role of subliminal al as a game changer. AI is evolving so fast that if we do not control our minds, someone else will likely control our minds for us. We need to recognize the profound and dynamic positive and negative impacts of artificial intelligence (Al) on societies, the environment, ecosystems, and human lives.

From the legal point of view, freedom of thought is a fundamental human right. In the age of neuroscientific insights and interventions, it is particularly important. Professor Neuwirth reconstructs the scope and meaning of this right in the book and proposes four principles for its interpretation. The professor discussed “neuro crimes” to refer to criminal activities that involve neural information. Brain hackers can deduce private information such as banking information, recognized faces, and PINs. This type of attack can also be performed subliminally, without the conscious awareness of the target. Finally, he suggested that we need to strengthen the regulation of AI, especially Regulating Subliminal AI Systems.

Experts and students engaged in lively discussions on the topic of artificial intelligence technology and exchanged views on standardizing subliminal artificial intelligence systems.

Abstract

The “Liaocheng Yu Huan Case”, which gained notoriety as a matricide and murder case, involved the current legitimate defense system in the law and also triggered a tense relationship between morality and the law. As result, it has become one of the most widely publicized criminal cases in recent years. The second-instance verdict aimed to balance legal and public opinion, legal reasoning, and common sense and is considered to have achieved a positive impact both legally and socially. However, there are two versions of the “Yu Huan Case”, one official and one popular, which seemingly tell the same story but have significantly different underlying logic. This lecture will explore the case in the context of Chinese historical culture and reality, attempting to reveal the dilemmas and deep-rooted causes faced by the judge in handling the “Liaocheng Yu Huan Case”, as well as the limitations of legal responses to public opinion.

Professor Zhiping LIANG is a renowned jurist in China. He is a Full-time Professor at Sino-West Academy and Guanghua Law School of Zhejiang University. With his vast knowledge and expertise, Professor Liang will contextualize the “Liaocheng Yu Huan Case” within a broader historical, social, and cultural framework, offering a professional legal interpretation of the pertinent phenomena.

All academic staff, students, and interested parties are cordially invited. We look forward to seeing you at the event!

Participating students will be awarded 1 Smart Point.

This activity will be counted as the “Knowledge integration” area of the “Whole Person Development Award Programme”, students who attended will receive 20 UM Competencies (CS).

Abstract

In November 2022, a San Francisco-based company called OpenAI released a free chatbot in the form of a web application for the public to test. It is estimated to be the fastest-growing internet service ever, reaching 100 million users just two months after launch. The chatbot, which is called ChatGPT, can generate an answer to almost any question it is asked. Enthusiastic fans have posted a significant number of examples of computer code, essays, poems, and even jokes generated by the chatbot, and these have been a sensation for some time. But what exactly is ChatGPT? How much of an impact does it have on our daily lives? Will it be a blessing or a curse for researchers? And what is its future?

The IAS has invited scholars to discuss the truth and impact of ChatGPT from multidisciplinary perspectives.

2022-2023 IAS 4th Lecture on Frontiers in Humanities – “Asian Criminology – the Concept and Paradigm”

2023-03-16T00:02:21+08:00

The fourth Lecture on Frontiers in Humanities organized by the Institute of Advanced Studies in Humanities and Social Sciences (IAS) was successfully held on 10 February 2023 (Friday). Professor Liu Jianhong, a Distinguished Professor Department of Global Legal Studies of the Faculty of Law, was invited to give a lecture on the topic “Asian Criminology – the Concept and Paradigm”, and share his research achievements. Professor Xu Jianhua, Head and Associate Professor of the Department of Sociology, FSS, was invited to be the moderator.

Professor Liu first introduced the current situation of criminology research including criminology having grown primarily in the West, and having achieved tremendous success. However, he believes that the dominant theories often do not work very well in non-Western countries. A critical challenge for criminology is to resolve the conflict between the universality of theories and Asian criminology can be understood as a response to this critical challenge.

Secondly, Professor Liu explained the definition and approach of Asian criminology. He defines Asian criminology as “the study of crime and justice in the Asian context”. Asian criminologist should be someone who studies crime and justice in Asia. The approach of Asian criminology is a “context-focused approach”, because of the extensive coverage of Asian content including one particular place, a country, a group, or the whole of Asia.

Finally, Professor Liu discussed the Asian paradigm and future directions. Asian paradigm includes the concept, the approach, the theoretical contributions, and institutionalization. For the future directions of Asian criminology, he specifically mentioned the impact of digital criminology on criminology research and the arguments that Asian criminologists need to deepen their understanding of the developing markets in different countries, providing “high-quality products”.

Around 120 participants attended the event, including professionals, students, alumni, and external audience, effectively promoting academic dialogue and boosting the intellectual atmosphere on UM campus.
