In order to cultivate students’ appreciation of photography and videography, Moon Chun Memorial College, University of Macau was pleased to invite Mr. Steven U, a multimedia artist in Macao, as instructor, offering a 12-session photography and videography course from February to April, 2023.  The participants learned shooting skills and video language, and gained a deeper understanding of the humanities, history and culture of Macao.  The course included classroom learning and outdoor practice.  Participants practised shooting skills through outdoor college activities, such as Joyous Hiking in Macao Series or Macao Cultural Excursion Series. Finally, their work was printed into a Postcards Collection entitled, “Macao in My Lens, City in My Heart”. Eighteen unique photos in this Collection were assembled to depict the city’s “hiking trail scenery”, “cultural architecture” and “urban landscape”, thereby manifesting Macao’s humanistic, historical and cultural nature.

Postcards Collection

To encourage students to actively participate in community services and increase their concern about  social issues, Moon Chun Memorial College, University of Macau cooperated with Pou Tai Youth and Family Integrated Service Center to launch a service-learning project for parenting education from January to April, 2023. The purpose of the project is to promote the cognition of paternal role and increase the paternal participation in parenting. Paternal involvement is an important task in future parent education, so this service-learning project is especially supported by Seac Pai Van Official School and Macao Library and Information Management Association.

This service-learning project was hosted and trained by college’s non-resident fellow, Prof. Nai-hua LIU (Faculty of Education), and supported by resident fellow, Ms. Alice Hong, who assisted 14 students in implementing the service plan. Before providing services, participants received 20 hours of professional training, including picture book teaching, drama in education, family education, parenting education planning and implementation methods. Students from different faculties wrote service proposals under the guidance of Prof. Liu, and tried to apply the knowledge and skills they learned during the service period. Service-learning focuses on application of academic knowledge and personal reflection. Therefore, during the service period, Prof. Liu gave guidance to students and led service reflection for each session. After the service, each student needs to complete a personal learning portfolio to integrate the knowledge learned.

During the eight-week service-learning project, students have improved their knowledge integration competency, as well as service and leadership competency through professional knowledge learning, service provision and personal reflection. Among the participants, Jenny Chan, Amy Wong, Katherine Yang, Joana Zhu, Wolf Lei and Cathy Chen  exhibited excellent service and leadership, and were awarded outstanding service certificates.

On 6^th May, 2023, Interim College Master, Prof. Kwok-Cheung Cheung welcomed UM College Masters, fellows and colleagues, students, and alumni, to College Hall for MCM College’s 10th Anniversary Concert: celebrating its first decade of UM’s 4-1 Educational Model, and serving as a platform for whole-person education through the systematic planning of experiential learning programmes. The concert showcased the diverse talents of MCMC students, alumni, and faculty, with nearly 50 performers taking part in this momentous occasion.

Over the past decade, MCMC had become an integral part of the community and peer education, and the College took pride in the achievements of its students, alumni, and faculty. This event was a testament to the vibrant community that had been built at MCMC, highlighting the impact that the College had on their lives and development.

“We were honored to have so many alumni and friends of MCMC join us for this celebration,” said Professor Kwok-Cheung CHEUNG, Interim College Master of MCMC, in his opening remark. “Their support and contributions had been instrumental in shaping MCMC into the community it is today.”

The Moon Chun Memorial College 10th-anniversary concert was an unforgettable day, celebrating the rich cultural heritage of the college.

In order to cultivate the awareness of integrity among college students, and encourage them to advocate and promote integrity in the community as volunteers, Moon Chun Memorial College, University of Macau and Commission Against Corruption (CCAC) jointly organised UNI Volunteer Service Project – University & Integrity from February to April 2023, a total of 12 students participated. This voluntary project combines training and practice. The CCAC staff provides students with professional training and opportunities to participate in the promotion of integrity.

After completing the anti-corruption legal training, presentation and guided tour skills, the volunteers assisted CCAC staff  to provide guided tour services for the general public at the Taipa branch office. In addition, the volunteers also applied what they had learned in the training and their own skills to plan their own new media promotion on campus. They also assisted CCAC in filming anti-corruption promotional clips. During the service period, CCAC arranged for volunteers to visit the Legislative Assembly of Macau, so as to broaden their horizons. Among the participants, Lisa Seng, Sandy Peng, Filipe Wong, Katty Zhang and Lily Hong exhibited outstanding performances and were awarded “Excellent Volunteer” certificates.

In the second semester of AY2022/23, Associate Master, Dr. Manuel Noronha, created the Lusophone project: LusAfro Kreolu, to unite students from the Lusophone community, and promote cultural and musical exchanges at MCM College.  

After establishing musical collaborations with students from São Tomé e Príncipe in early February 2023, Dance Instructor and Chief Choreographer, Silvino Pinto initiated connectivity by establishing friendships among Brazilian, Malaysian and African ‘artists’ from Cabo Verde, Mozambique, Angola, São Tomé and Príncipe, and Macau.

In its second phase, LusAfro Kreolu workshops continue throughout March and April, with guest performances and routines debuting at HA Talent Show (April 1); High Table (April 27); and 10^th Anniversary Concert (May 6).

For the third and final phase, Associate Master, Dr. Manuel Noronha, Silvino Pinho and students met at MCM Master’s Dining Hall for a cultural gastronomical experience. The table d’hote was embellished with a contemporary twist of iconic lusophone cuisine and exotic rhythmic tunes. The finale will allow the ‘artists’ to reflect on their newly crafted dance steps and choreography across a spectrum of musical styles: Ússua, Puíta, Kizomba, and Tafua – each performance accompanied with selected music.

LusAfro Kreolu was a true gesture in demonstrating cultural appreciation, and bid farewell to our exchange students who return to their respective countries to continue with their academic pursuits.

On the evening of 20^th April, 2023, Moon Chun Memorial College, University of Macau screened “That Day” and “Beyond the Garden”, produced by the Elderly Service Department and Rehabilitation Service Department of Caritas Macau, written and directed by local Mr. Chi Wan U.  Attendees included College Master, Prof. Kwok-cheung CHEUNG; Centre-in-Charge of Longevity Home Care and Support Service, Ms. Suk Fan LAM; Centre-in-Charge of Caritas Macau Sunshine Center, Ms. Mei I LEONG; Director, Mr. Chi Wan U and Actress, Miss. Lei Tek Sam.

“That Day” is a film that focuses on the issues of the elderly, telling the story of a single-parent daughter taking care of her mother with dementia. The plot offers audience insight into the inner world of a caregiver and her struggles to balance work and family. “Beyond the Garden” tells the story of an elderly grandpa who feels guilty for his granddaughter’s accidental physical disability and is overprotective, but the granddaughter is optimistic and dared to explore the outside world. The plot allows the audience to reflect on whether  obstacles are visible or based on inner mentality that is invisible.

During the post-screening session, Director U shared how to present social issues through short films, and arouse social awareness and reflection on these issues through images. Ms  Lam and Ms Leong also shared the work challenges of frontline elderly services and rehabilitation services, as well as the problems faced by caregivers. After listening to the sharing of frontline workers, participants increased their understanding of the elderly with dementia and the disabled, and also had a better understanding of the elderly and rehabilitation services provided by Caritas Macau.

On the evening of 27th April, 2023, MCM College Interim Master, Professor Kwok-cheung Cheung warmly welcomed distinguished guests, college fellows and affiliates to an informal cocktail reception at Fellows’ Salon. After a light round of social networking, the party proceeded to the Gallery to inaugurate the college’s 10^th anniversary, beginning with the photo exhibition followed by the main event: Valedictory Dinner at College Hall.

In his opening remarks, Prof. Cheung began by looking back at how MCM College began its journey: recounting town & gown connectivity; organising signature events and academic workshops for students; as well as celebrating its achievements and importance of college life. A special greeting from Salzburg, Austria was conveyed via video sharing from former College Master, Prof. Kit Thompson, and Supernumerary Fellow, Dr. Patricia Thompson. This was followed by the keynote speech delivered by Ms. Shirley Chan, representative of the college donor, the late Dr. Chan Sui Kau.

The traditional presentation of “College Blues” by Vice-Rector Prof Mok Kai Meng and College Master Prof Kwok-cheung Cheung to college fellows, affiliates and students for sporting prowess, artistic excellence and distinctive contribution to MCMC, demonstrated this year’s recipients’ aptitude and accomplishment in MCMC events and activities.

Special performances for the evening included a traditional Puíta dance by international students; 《蘭亭序》performed by: Ni Cheng (Erhu) and: Gan Qianwen (Piano); 《劍別》performed: Wu Jiatai; 《想要的一定實現》performed by MCMC Choir –(Lee Chak Ho, Zhang Hanwen, Wong Lei Si, ChenYuqian, Gracinda Guedes Pinto, Lei I Kei, Liu Tsz Ling).

Just before the event came to a close, senior graduands – Zephyr U & Olivia Gan took to the stage to reflect of some touching and memorable moments. Finally, graduands performed  《千千闕歌》with such exuberance, bringing the outstanding event to a close with much enjoyment and merry-making redolent of celebratory student life.

University of Macau Moon Chun Memorial College Music Appreciation workshop invited Professor Chin Pang LEI, Assistant Professor from Department of Communication, as speaker to conclude the series for the academic year.

In the workshop, Prof Lei explored with participants how two Hong Kong pop stars, Anita Mui and Keung To, reflects the different facets of Hong Kong’s culture and history through the social dimension of pop music.

Dubbed as the “daughter of Hong Kong” and is regarded as a Cantopop diva, Prof Lei discussed how Anita Mui embodied the collective nostalgia and memory of Hong Kong people and the influence she symbolized as a social star. Through analyzing Keung To’s music videos, Prof Lei shared with audience how he integrates his personal experiences in his music and resonates with the community.
