On 24th February, 2023, led by The Affiliated School of the University of Macau Principal Lou Lan Heng, a group comprised of 24 Form 5 and Form 6 students and 6 faculty members experienced a day of college life at Moon Chun Memorial College, University of Macau. The tour began with a guided tour by Prof. Kam Weng TAM at the Macao Base for Primary and Secondary STEM Education, followed by a guided visit to State Key Laboratory of Internet of Things for Smart City by Prof. Ping SHEN.

After lunch at College Hall, students continued with a tour of MCM College to learn more about community and peer education across UM’s collegiate system. Participants took part in experiential learning workshops such as “Portuguese for Beginners” and “Career Interests Exploration”, which were conducted by Dr. Manuel Noronha and Miss Alice Hong respectively. Shortly after, three senior college student representatives were invited to highlight their respective college experiences with the group. During the sharing session, the students expressed their interest in continuing their studies at the University of Macau and looked forward to experiencing residential college life at MCM College. Finally, MCM College associate master, Dr. Manuel Noronha, presented certificates of participation to the group, and the activity came to a close.

On 13 February 2023, Moon Chun Memorial College, University of Macau held a film appreciation session of “The Little Prince” and explored adventures of the little prince based on the memories of an old pilot. “The Little Prince” is a French-Italian animated fantasy adventure drama film based on the 1943 novella under the same title by Antonie de Saint- Exupéry.  During the post-screening session, the “little prince” was invited to share topics on love, friendship, growing up with participants.   

This film reminded everyone that human connections matter most in life, and that it is only with heart that one can see rightly; what is essential is sometimes invisible to the naked eye. At the end of the event, participants made LEGO roses for Valentine’s Day and expressed love and caring for their loved ones on the following day.

In the evening of 22 February, 2023, Moon Chun Memorial College, University of Macau, is delighted to have invited an 8-year-old budding pianist Oliver Ioi Ioi to perform his first recital in the College.

At a young age, Oliver has already won numerous music competitions. That evening, Oliver performed Chopin Preludes Op. 28 No 1-6, Fantasy-Impromptu in C sharp minor and Etude in E major, Op 10 No 3. He was then joined by two other young musicians, Sabrina Wang and Issac Ho, performing Mozart Piano Trio in B flat major, K.502.

Combining his finger dexterity with sensitivity and depth, his performance allows one to simply bask in the musical narrative and transcendent execution of a gifted pianist. After the blossoming performances, an interview was conducted by MCM College Resident Fellow Dr Peggy Lau with Oliver, his teacher Dr Cecilia Long and mother Eunice.

Pure and resilient, lotus blooms at the break of day.  Look forward to the full blossom of Oliver’s talents.

MCM College continues its quest to embrace internationalism (through town & gown connectivity) with a new interest group, by welcoming the Lusophone community through Kizomba: “one of the most popular genres of Angolan dance and music”. Kizomba is said to have taken its origins from semba, with a unique blend of Kilapanda and Angolan Merengue, and sung with a smooth romantic vibe in Portuguese.

Mr. Silvino Pinho, chief choreographer and instructor, demonstrated to aspiring dancers that movement should be smooth and slow:  ideally danced on linear pathways with influences of Argentine Tango steps, and rhythmically gyrating the hips in forwards, backwards and circular movements following syncopation as well as the usual ‘on tempo’ footwork.

Kizomba is gaining increased popularity worldwide as a genre of romantic music that catches the ear, and as an incomparably sensual dance that captivates the soul. Silvino’s choreography exemplifies Kizomba as a popular dance style, and dancers must listen and interpret the music simply through their movements.

Workshops take place every Sunday from 5-7pm at Fellows’ Salon until the end of the semester. It is a great way not only to unwind, but essentially, a fun and healthy opportunity for students to hone their dancing skills into practice.

On 8^th February 2023, Moon Chun Memorial College, University of Macau was pleased to invite college affiliate, Dr. Chio Keong CHIN (FLL) to watch a popular film: “A Guilty Conscience” with students at the cinema.  The legal thriller depicts the story of an attorney (known for his sharp tongue) who mishandled a child abuse case, causing the innocent defendant to be imprisoned for 17 years due to his negligence.

A post-screening review was held by Dr. Chin at the college who guided students to rethink the film from a legal perspective.  He answered various questions from students, such as why there is a jury in Hong Kong, what is legal privilege. During the discussion, Dr. Chin focused on justice and ethics.  He concluded that although the lawyer was not “professional” in handling cases, however he did sought justice in the end.
