【IAS&FAH-DPHIL】UM Philosophy Forum Distinguished Scholars Series – 6: Professor Chenyang Li (23 September 2024; 4-5:30 PM)

2024-09-13T11:56:04+08:00

Dear Colleagues and Students,

The Institute of Advanced Studies in Humanities and Social Sciences (IAS) cordially invites you to participate in the UM Philosophy Forum Distinguished Scholars Series – 6, scheduled for 23 September 2024 (Mon). We are honoured to have Professor Chenyang Li from Nanyang Technological University, explore the topic of “Reshaping Confucianism.” We are also delighted to have Professor Lisheng Chen and Professor Qingjie Wang from the Department of Philosophy and Religious Studies of FAH, as the discussants, and Professor Xingzhong Yu, Director of IAS and Chair Professor of the FLL, as the moderator for this forum. Please find the details below:

  • Title: Reshaping Confucianism
  • Organizers: Institute of Advanced Studies in Humanities and Social Sciences; Department of Philosophy and Religious Studies, FAH
  • Date: 23 September, 2024 (Mon)
  • Time: 4-5:30 PM
  • Language: English and Chinese
  • Venue: Lecture Hall, Cultural Building (E34 – G011)
  • Registration: Click HERE

Abstract:
This talk will present the main argument in the speaker’s recent book, Reshaping Confucianism: A Progressive Inquiry (Oxford University Press, 2023). It includes the following components. First, Confucianism is a living tradition and should be considered as such in our search. Second, there are at least two approaches to studying Confucianism: historical and philosophical. These serve different purposes and should not be confused.
Third, in developing Confucianism in the 21st century, we should follow a principle of progressive humanity. We should not only make sense of ancient thinkers by placing them under their own historical circumstances as prescribed by the principle of humanity, but also expand their ideas on the basis of their overall philosophical dispositions in response to modern sensibilities. That is, from an ancient thinker’s general attitude and philosophical framework, we propose new views that someone sharing such attitude and framework may come to hold under modern circumstances.

We look forward to seeing you at this event! For more information about IAS, please visit the website of IAS at https://ias.um.edu.mo/. Should you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact us at ias.programme@um.edu.mo.

【IAS&FAH-DPHIL】The Philosophy Forum Distinguished Scholars Series – 5 was successfully held

2024-10-04T00:02:12+08:00

The Philosophy Forum Distinguished Scholars Series 5, co-organized by the Institute of Advanced Studies in Humanities and Social Sciences (IAS) and the Department of Philosophy and Religious Studies of the Faculty of Arts and Humanities (FAH), was successfully held on August 29, 2024, at the UM Gallery Auditorium. The lecture, titled ‘Human Agency and Human Sacrifice: A Neo-Tiantai Perspective’ featured Professor Brook Ziporyn from the University of Chicago as the speaker, Professor Ellen Zhang and Professor Hans-Georg Moeller from the Department of Philosophy and Religious Studies, FAH, as the discussants, and Professor Shaoyang Lin, Head of Academic Program and Publication of IAS and a Distinguished Professor of the Department of History, FAH, as the moderator.

Prof. Ziporyn began by questioning the significance of human sacrifice throughout most of human history and pre-history, and introduced two theories to explain this phenomenon. Georges Bataille’s theory emphasizes the struggle between humans’ structured, purpose-driven lives and their underlying, more primal instincts. He believes that religion and ritual violence act as a release, providing a temporary sense of unity through controlled expressions of violence. René Girard’s theory, in contrast, attributes human conflict to mimetic desire—where individuals copy others’ wants, sparking competition and violence. Girard proposes that societies resolve this through the scapegoat mechanism, where a single person is made responsible for social unrest, and their sacrifice temporarily restores peace.

Prof. Ziporyn then applied Neo-Tiantai Buddhist concepts to these theories, introducing the Tiantai Buddhist concept of the Three Truths (emptiness, provisional positing, and the middle) and suggesting that the key to understanding human agency lies in recognizing the inherent multiplicity and interdependence of all identities. He used the Möbius strip as a metaphor to illustrate how identities can be coherent locally yet incoherent globally, and how this interplay leads to the complex nature of human agency. The lecture concluded with a call to embrace the ambivalence of existence and to recognize the illusory nature of our desires and actions. Prof. Ziporyn proposed that by universalizing suffering and delusion, we can achieve a state of Buddhahood, which is the ultimate end of suffering and the beginning of true clarity.

In the discussion session, Prof. Moeller shared his views on the complex relationship between pleasure and disgust, Prof. Zhang discussed the role of ambiguity in religious and theological contexts and the impact of technology, and Prof. Ziporyn also shared his views on the Buddhist perspective on evil.

The event attracted a wide range of scholars and students, sparking a lively discussion about the role of ritual and violence in human culture and the potential for Buddhist philosophy to provide new insights into these issues.

【IAS】GUIA Lecture Series “The Diffusion of Western Influence Eastward or Eastern Influence Westward: Tracing the Early History of Printing in Macau” was successfully conducted

2024-10-05T00:01:11+08:00

The 4th GUIA lecture organized by the Institute of Advanced Studies in Humanities and Social Sciences (IAS) was successfully held on August 27th at the Wu Yee Sun Library Lecture Hall. The guest speaker was Prof. LAM lok Fong, Agnes, Director of the Centre for Macau Studies and Associate Professor in the Department of Communication, Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Macau. The lecture topic was “The Diffusion of Western Influence Eastward or Eastern Influence Westward: Tracing the Early History of Printing in Macau”. The GUIA Lecture leverages Chinese Confucianism to expand Macau’s global culture, fostering cultural exchange among diverse cultures in Macau, China, and beyond. It provides a platform that enables interdisciplinary, high-quality, and international academic exchanges.

The history of journalism in Macau begins with the publication of Abelha da China by the Portuguese Constitutionalists in 1822, which was inspired by the modern printing press that was being developed in the West. However, by this time, the Portuguese had already been in Macau for two and a half centuries, and in the early 17th century, modern newspapers with regular printing had already appeared in Western countries. What explains the delay in the development of a similar publication in Macau until the 19th century?

Prof. Lam found a book Christiani Pueri Institutio Adolescentiaeque Perfugium published in Macau in 1588, which was the first book printed after the introduction of movable type printing from the West to China. But from the perspective of the printing press, it was the Eastern influencing the Western first. According to the letters of Father Alexander Valignano, S. J., the Jesuits had already applied the Chinese engraving press to the printing of Western European texts at least as early as 1585. At the same time, the missionary Matteo Ricci translated the Four Books and Five Classics into Latin, and by comparing the printing techniques of the East and the West, he appreciated the high efficiency and low cost of Chinese engraving.

After Robert Morrison arrived in China, he continued to use the engraved, wire-bound method of publishing, and in 1833, he founded the Tsŭ-wăn-pien, A Miscellaneous Paper, which was printed with movable type and pioneered the use of Chinese punctuation, making it the earliest modernized Chinese periodical in China. At the time, Lin Zexu took note of Morrison’s other newspaper, The Evangelist and Miscellanea Sinica, which was the first joint English-Chinese newspaper published in China, covering social news that taught the traditional manners of housemaids, as well as political developments in China and even the Asian region. On the eve of the Opium War, Lin Zexu compiled a compendium of Morrison’s (translating the Peking Gazette) collection of information on China into the Macau News and reported.

At the end of the lecture, Prof. Lam concluded that Macau was for a time the center of newspaper publishing in China between the end of the 16th century and the first half of the 19th century. The missionaries who arrived in Macau prioritized what they considered to be the more advanced oriental printing techniques in their publishing activities, and the publication of these books and journals testifies to the relatively loose social control of the imperial and local governments during the Ming and Qing dynasties. This early history of publishing in Macau shows that the history of cultural exchange between East and West was not a straightforward consequence of the introduction of Western technologies in China, but rather a long period of mutual appreciation, learning and adaptation. During this period, while Western ideas spread to China, Eastern influences also permeated Western culture.

The IAS aims to contribute to Macau society by providing more interdisciplinary academic lectures with an international perspective. This lecture attracted more than 100 students and faculty members who participated on-site. The IAS will continue to organize high-quality academic events, providing more opportunities to deepen academic exchanges and broaden knowledge horizons.

Dear Colleagues and Students,

The Institute of Advanced Studies in Humanities and Social Sciences (IAS) cordially invites you to participate in the Philosophy Forum Distinguished Scholars Series – 5, scheduled for 29 August 2024 (Thu). We are honoured to have Professor Brook Ziporyn from the University of Chicago, explore the topic of “Human Agency and Human Sacrifice: A Neo-Tiantai Perspective.”

We are also delighted to have Professor Hans-Georg Moeller and Professor Ellen Zhang from the Department of Philosophy and Religious Studies of FAH, as the discussants, and Professor Shaoyang Lin, Head of Academic Programme and Publication of IAS, Distinguished Professor in the Department of History, FAH, as the moderator for this forum. Abstract:
In this talk I’ll be mulling over the contrasting roles of violence in the theories of religions of Georg Bataille and René Girard. Both of these writers take note of the fact that for much of human history and pre-history, human or animal sacrifice plays a surprisingly outsized role in religious and (therefore) social life. They have sharply differing views of the meaning of this phenomenon and of its contemporary significance for understanding the role of violence in human psychology. To disentangle this, we’ll have to talk about Bataille’s notions of intimacy, communication, tool-making, excess and uselessness on the one hand, and about Girard’s notions of mimetic desire and scapegoating on the other. I’ll try to sum up the salient points of both theories, and then ruminate a bit on the application of some of the takeaway points when applied to the microcosmic level of the human psyche, considered in Buddhist terms as a precarious society of highly heterogenous collections of disunified micro-drives and perspectives. With the combination of these theoretical perspectives, I’ll explore a naturalistic account of the phenomenology of human decision-making and agency on the model of the religious practice of scapegoating violence, and what implications that would have for considering human behavior from the Bataillean, Girardian and finally the Tiantai Buddhist perspective.
