INTERNATIONAL ENGLISH TESTS: TIPS FOR SUCCESS

Planning to study abroad and looking to improve your English language proficiency test scores? Many students aiming for international opportunities face the challenge of performing well on standardized English tests such as the IELTS. Recognizing this need, the English Co-Curricular Activities Committee  (ECAC) of the English Language Centre (ELC) , with the facilitation of ELC Visiting Instructor, Mr. Matthew Lambert, organized an insightful and highly practical workshop on April 9th, 2025, dedicated to helping students boost their test performance through expert guidance and hands-on practice.

This workshop served as an excellent opportunity for University of Macau students who are preparing to take the IELTS test for a variety of purposes. Whether it is for a student exchange program, a master’s degree, or an internship abroad, achieving a high score in the test is often a key requirement. The ECAC aimed to support students on this journey by providing direct access to an extensive experience of Mr. Lambert, who guided them through every stage of the test.

The session began with a detailed explanation of the test format, including the four key components: Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking. Mr. Lambert offered valuable advice on how to manage time effectively during the test and emphasized common pitfalls students should avoid. Special attention was given to timing strategies, answer structure, and methods for refining responses to achieve higher scores.

To reinforce the tips shared, the workshop also included practical exercises. Students received practice sheets that replicated actual test questions – particularly those in the listening section. This allowed participants to experience the test environment in a simulated but supportive setting, helping them gain confidence and a clearer understanding of what to expect.

Throughout the workshop, students showed great enthusiasm and active participation. Most of the attendees were planning to take the IELTS in the near future, so they took the opportunity seriously, engaging fully in each mock practice. One of the highlights of the workshop was that it not only allowed students to sharpen their existing skills but also introduced them to new techniques they had never considered before. Many students expressed how useful the session was in helping them prepare the international language tests more effectively.

At the end of the workshop, Mr. Lambert welcomed individual questions from participants. This one-on-one interaction gave students the chance to address their specific concerns, receive personalized feedback, and clarify any doubts they had about the exam process.

【ELC -ECAC 】Photo Sharing : “ American Ways 2”

2025-03-26T17:19:16+08:00

Did you know that the meaning behind the expression “Goodbye” is “God be with you”? It must be one of the most surprising trivia tidbits brought to us in the latest workshop by the English Co-Curricular Activities Committee (ECAC), “American Ways 2”.

Like last year’s workshop, Mr. Ricardo Ribeiro led us into a deeper look at American social norms, traditions and behaviors via fun and engaging activities. The workshop began with a warm-up activity in which participants formed two circles.  They were asked to pass a soft ball within their group and the person with the ball would say one thing they know about America.  Afterwards, Mr. Ribeiro shared a story about a flock of geese flying in a formation with a little goose straying from the flock and ended up being hunted by a hawk. With this story, Mr. Ribeiro introduced the highlight of the workshop: the characteristics of individualism and collectivism cultures, the two beliefs that characterize the culture of America and China respectively.

Throughout the workshop, Mr. Ribeiro introduced phrases such as “people adhere to tradition” and “people believe that conflict clears the air”.  He asked the participants to interpret the phrases and state whether they reflect an individualistic or a collectivistic culture.  In between sections, trivia questions about the USA were asked as a game for the participants.  A token was given to the team for each correct answer. The winning team collected more than 11 tokens in the entire game!

After the games, Mr. Ribeiro showed two different versions of a TV commercial of a popular soft drink.  The first commercial, which was shown in the US, had an individualist theme.  The second commercial, which was shown in China, had a collectivist theme. This highlighted the importance and significance of the individualist and collectivist ideologies, and how they influence the business world.

Before the end of the workshop, Mr. Ribeiro invited the students to think of a new ending for the ‘geese’ story that he shared at the start of the workshop.  He removed the hawk from the narrative and asked them to come up with a different ending.  The groups presented creative twists and new perspectives to the story, and ended it with happy endings!

The workshop was very interesting, thought-provoking and exciting. It did not only broaden students’ horizons about the US and the American culture, it also helped analyze the contrast between the American and the Chinese cultures in a vivid and engaging way.

Stay tuned for the upcoming announcement about the next ECAC workshop taking place in April. Until then, God be with you!

【ELC -EWCC 】Photo Sharing : Successful Conclusion of the 21-Day Podcast Challenge

2025-03-17T17:06:33+08:00

The English Writing and Communication Centre (EWCC) successfully wrapped up its 21-Day Podcast Challenge, an initiative designed to enhance students’ listening skills, vocabulary, and communication confidence. From Feb 12 to March 5, participants engaged in structured podcast listening and interactive discussions. A total of 15 participants completed the challenge and developed a long-term habit of using podcasts for both academic and personal enrichment. The 21-Day Challenge showcased students’ remarkable progress in listening comprehension, vocabulary acquisition, and communication skills, while also fostering self-reflection, critical thinking, and autonomous learning abilities.

Over 21 days, participants delved into diverse psychological topics on podcasts and expanded interdisciplinary academic languages. Through carefully selected podcast episodes, students explored psychological concepts related to emotional resilience, self-trust, and personal motivation, making direct connections to their own experiences, which further encouraged students to reflect on their mental wellbeing and personal growth. Through three weekly forums, students not only engaged with psychological and intellectual perspectives but also applied insights to their daily lives. Additionally, exposure to different podcasts enriched their vocabulary, equipping them with language relevant to both academic and real-life contexts. One participant remarked, “I never thought I could learn so much just by listening to a podcast.”

The challenge helps participants develop effective listening strategies and build communication confidence, empowering students to become autonomous learners. Students practiced active listening strategies that improved their comprehension and retention of spoken English, such as the Cornell Note-Taking method, to enhance their ability to extract and organize key information. Beyond this, students became autonomous English speakers by participating in group discussions where they expressed their thoughts and reflections. Initially hesitant, many participants gained confidence as the sessions progressed, which demonstrated greater passion to communicate in English. The structured yet informal setting allowed them to practice articulating ideas and exchanging perspectives with peers. Many students expressed that this activity helps them reinforce their listening takeaways and speaking skills.

Their success highlights the effectiveness of integrating digital learning resources as a foundation for interactive discussions. As an extension of this initiative, we created the first-ever Writing Centre podcast, inspired by insights shared in our weekly forums. We encourage you to explore the EWCC Podtopia Podcast Channel—not only for relaxation but also to gain valuable insights from our students. You may find that you share similar concerns with our participants and draw inspiration from their experiences shared in three forums. The writing centre EWCC is always here to support students in improving their English skills. Along with the 21 day challenge, we offer academic workshops, tutorial series, consultation sessions, library drop-in services, interactive chat rooms and i-Learner English for Universities Marathon Competition etc. These resources give UM students valuable opportunities to practice and grow in a friendly and supportive environment. Looking ahead, we encourage students to keep exploring new ways to strengthen their language skills and make learning a lifelong habit!

Photography in the American West: A Journey Through Time and Technology

The English Co-Curricular Activities Committee of the English Language Centre (ELC-ECAC) hosted an immersive workshop titled “Photography in the American West” on 5 March 2025, which was facilitated by Mr. Hugo Teixeira and supported by ELC instructors.

The workshop was thoughtfully divided into three parts to provide participants with a comprehensive understanding of the historical development, techniques, and artistry of photography, especially from American West.

In the first part, Mr. Teixeira introduced the origins of American West photography, highlighting its role in documenting the expansion of the frontier and the cultural significance of iconic images. He shared fascinating stories about early photographers like Ansel Adams and Edward Curtis, whose work captured the rugged beauty and spirit of the West.

The second part featured a group discussion and hands-on exploration of vintage tin-type photographs. Participants examined various photographs on tintype materials, learning about the historical processes used to produce the photos. The interactive and engaging session allowed students to appreciate the craftsmanship and artistry behind early photographic techniques.

The final part of the workshop, students had a first-hand experience in taking photographs with a vintage view camera. Under the guidance of Mr. Teixeira, participants learned how to frame shots and adjust perspectives to capture stunning images.

This practical session not only deepened participants’ understanding of traditional photography but also inspired creativity and technical skills. As the event neared its end, students immersed themselves in the hands-on experience of a vintage camera. They explored the fascinating principles of image formation unique to the classic device. With smartphones in hand, they captured the nostalgic charm of their peers as they appeared upside down through the lens of the old-fashioned cameras, creating a delightful blend of past and present.

The workshop was a remarkable opportunity for participants to explore the rich history of American West photography while gaining hands-on experience with vintage techniques and equipment. It was an enriching experience that combined education, creativity, and a deep appreciation for the art of photography. Mr. Teixeira’s witty and engaging storytelling, combined with his captivating anecdotes and images, sparked participants’ enthusiasm, filling the entire event with laughter and joy.

Special thanks to Mr. Teixeira for his expertise in making this event a success. We look forward to more inspiring workshops in the future!
