【IAS】Guest Lecture: “Re-Thinking Global Political Theory” was successfully held

2025-02-20T00:00:44+08:00

On January 16, Guest Lecture on the topic of “Re-Thinking Global Political Theory” was successfully held, organized by the Institute of Advanced Studies in Humanities and Social Sciences (IAS). The speaker, Professor Michael Puett, Professor of Chinese History and Anthropology and Director of the Asia Center at Harvard University, delved into the impact of neoliberalism on the global economy and positioned China’s political debates within a larger historical context to foster a more global understanding of political theory. Professor Xingzhong Yu, Director of IAS and Chair Professor of the Department of Global Legal Studies of FLL, was invited to moderate the talk.

In his address, Professor Michael Puett highlighted that while neoliberalism presents a relatively clear narrative globally, this narrative might need rethinking from a Chinese perspective. He traced the historical evolution of neoliberal policies, particularly their resurgence during the 1970s stagflation in the U.S., emphasizing how these theories influenced leaders like Margaret Thatcher and Ronald Reagan, leading to the dismantling of welfare states and public institutions.

Additionally, Professor Yu emphasized the complexities of integrating Western neoliberal ideas into China’s unique context, particularly how to balance rational choice theory and emotional decision-making. He encouraged the audience to consider how evaluating interest maximization is often emotionally charged yet can still be deemed rational within China’s ideological framework.

During the Q&A session, the audience engaged actively on the influence of global governance systems on national economic policy sovereignty. Professor Michael Puett pointed out that nations signing onto such agreements often cede economic policy sovereignty, leading to increased wealth concentration and inequality. He called for a radical reevaluation of existing economic and administrative frameworks to address contemporary global challenges effectively.

In conclusion, the lecture not only provided an in-depth analysis of neoliberalism but also prompted attendees to reflect on how to re-examine political theory in the context of globalization. This event undoubtedly offered rich intellectual insights and sparked deeper considerations for future economic policies and governance models.

Dear Colleagues and Students,

The Institute of Advanced Studies in Humanities and Social Sciences (IAS) cordially invite you to participate in IAS Guest Lecture: “Re-Thinking Global Political Theory”, scheduled for 16 January 2025 (Thu). Please find the details below:

  • Title: “Re-Thinking Global Political Theory”
  • Speaker: Prof. Michael Puett (Director of the Asia Center, Professor of Chinese History and Anthropology, Harvard University)
  • Moderator: Prof. Xingzhong Yu (Director of IAS, Chair Professor of Global Legal Studies, University of Macau)
  • Date: 16 January 2025 (Thu)
  • Time: 15:30 – 17:00 PM
  • Language: English
  • Venue: Lecture Hall, Cultural Building (E34 – G011)
  • Registration: Click Here

Biography of Speaker:

Michael Puett is the Walter C. Klein Professor of Chinese History and Anthropology and the Director of the Asia Center at Harvard University. His interests are focused on the inter-relations between religion, philosophy, anthropology, and history, with the hope of bringing the study of China into larger historical, comparative, and theoretical frameworks. Michael is the recipient of a Harvard College Professorship for excellence in undergraduate teaching, the Joseph R. Levenson Memorial Teaching Prize, the Star Family Prize for Excellence in Advising, and the Everett Mendelsohn Excellence in Mentoring Award. Since 2012 his course on classical Chinese ethical and political theory has been one of the highest enrolled undergraduate courses at Harvard.

Abstract:

We seem to have a relatively clear (if somewhat uncomfortable) narrative concerning the rise and (potential) decline of neoliberalism. But, if we take into account the perspective of China, such a narrative may have to be re-thought. This talk will place some of the current political debates in China within a larger historical context and argue that these debates may force us to re-think some of our assumptions concerning the workings of the state and the economy and accordingly to re-think some of our readings of recent history. My hope is that the talk will help to contribute to developing a more global understanding of political theory.

On the occasion of the fifth anniversary of the Institute for Advanced Studies in Humanities and Social Sciences at the University of Macau, we would like to express our gratitude for your unwavering support to us. Your involvement and support have helped build a strong foundation for our interdisciplinary research platform and inspired us to keep moving forward. The IAS is excited to carry on our mission, rooted in Macau, by organizing high-quality academic activities that showcase the diversity of academic collaboration.

The Institute of Advanced Studies in Humanities and Social Sciences (IAS) of the University of Macau cordially invites you to participate in the “Fourth IAS Annual Conference” from November 7 to 8, 2024. The conference theme is Understanding the Population Dynamics: Multidisciplinary Perspectives on a Global Challenge.

Conference Theme

The global population dynamics manifests in many critical aspects—rapid population growth in some regions due to immigration and significant declines in others because of social and economic reasons. These demographic shifts present complex challenges that impact socio-economic stability, environmental sustainability, and global health. This conference aims to unpack the multifaceted nature of population dynamics through a multidisciplinary lens, exploring its causes, consequences, and the efficacy of current strategies aimed at addressing these issues. Drawing upon recent research and case studies, this conference will provide a comprehensive overview of the demographic trends shaping our world and facilitate the exchange of ideas and best practices for addressing these trends. This conference is geared towards academics, policymakers, environmentalists, and professionals working in public health and urban development, as well as anyone interested in the intersection of population dynamics and global sustainability.

Objective

The primary objective of this conference is to foster a deeper understanding of the global population dynamics, emphasizing an integrated approach that incorporates insights from demography, economics, law, philosophy, history, environmental science, and public policy. By examining the global challenges of population increase and decrease, this conference will highlight the need for nuanced, region-specific solutions while also advocating for international collaboration in addressing global demographic imbalances.
