UM and Fudan Students Collaborate to Advance Rural Revitalization and Educational Empowerment

To deepen the exchange and collaboration between universities in Shanghai and Macau, to enable students to gain a deeper understanding of China’s rural educational resources, and to enhance cultural awareness of Chinese agrarian civilization, 17 Resident Fellows (RF) and students from Henry Fok Pearl Jubilee College (HFPJC) and  Cheong Kun Lun College (CKLC) of University of Macau (UM) traveled over a thousand miles to engage in a meaningful summer service-learning activity with Fudan University. This event took place in Jiangcun, China, which is known as a “window for the world to understand China’s rural areas, from July 8 to 19, 2024.” The activity was led by RF Chang Kit Peng from HFPJC and Fang Shimin from CKLC.

UM students first participated in a three-day intensive training at Fudan University, where they learned about the crucial role of education in rural revitalization and studied interdisciplinary problem-based learning. They mastered core concepts and research methods of educational empowerment, laying a solid foundation for rendering subsequent practical activities. This service learning experience not only included comprehensive theoretical background knowledge but also featured an in-depth cultural exploration in Jiangcun, Jiangsu, China. The aim was to inject new insight and vitality into rural education and the development of future rural builders.

During the exploration in Jiangcun, UM, Fudan, and Jiangcun Experimental School’s teachers and students were divided into five groups: “The Story of Fei Xiaotong and Jiangcun”, “The Evolution of Education in Jiangcun”, and three focus groups on “Exploring Jiangcun’s Ancient Bridges”. The groups engaged in various exploration activities in Jiangcun. The “Story of Fei Xiaotong and Jiangcun” group conducted interviews with residents, they visited the Fei Xiaotong Memorial Hall and reviewed historical materials to delve into the connection between Fei Xiaotong and Jiangcun. The “Evolution of Education in Jiangcun” group visited the village to find mysterious friends and closely interacted with residents to understand the educational development process and the differences between urban and rural education. The “Exploring Jiangcun’s Ancient Bridges” groups investigated historical sites and reviewed village records to explore the history and culture of Jiangcun’s ancient bridges. The group studying “Hong’en Bridge” created catchy rhymes, while the “Guangfu Bridge” group collected and organized patterns on the bridge, learning about its history and producing a brochure on ancient bridge conservation. The “Dongmiao Bridge” group created a physical bridge model, showcasing the harmonious blend of ancient charm and modern technology. These exploration activities not only enhanced the teachers’ and students’ understanding of Jiangcun’s history and culture but also promoted the excavation and preservation of local educational and cultural resources.

At the closing ceremony of the programme, each group showcased their research findings to residents and students’ parents in the Jiangcun Cultural Hall, receiving enthusiastic responses and bringing substantial cultural and educational outcomes to the community. Through the combination of theory and practice, teachers and students from both universities conducted in-depth discussions on important topics such as the relationship between rural revitalization and education, providing strong support for implementing the rural revitalization strategy.

Additionally, the teachers and students visited the Jiangcun Elderly Center, bringing joy to the elderly. During interactions, they discovered that the elders possessed unique skills, and the lively tunes of Wu songs (Yangcheng Fishery Songs), a form of intangible cultural heritage, captivated the teachers and students. Finally, UM students toured museums, historical sites, and modern architecture in Shanghai and Jiangsu. They gathered information and stories about the attractions in advance, acting as “tour guides” to provide detailed introductions to other members.

Through exploring their hometown with primary school students from Jiangcun Experimental School, conducting field surveys, and engaging in interactive exchanges, the college students not only deepened their understanding of Jiangcun’s unique culture and history but also gained a deeper appreciation for rural education through practical experience. They gained a comprehensive understanding of China’s development and cultural heritage from ancient times to the present, experienced the scenery of the water towns in Jiangsu, and forged deep friendships through a series of icebreaking, interactive, and discussion activities!

Henry Fok Pearl Jubilee College successfully launched the Cantonese Interest Class with strong support from the UM Library

2023-12-09T00:01:11+08:00

Henry Fok Pearl Jubilee College successfully launched the Cantonese Interest Class with strong support from the UM Library

It is always a challenge for non-Cantonese-speaking students to adapt to a Cantonese-speaking environment and to assist those students to integrate smoothly into Macau, Henry Fok Pearl Jubilee College (HFPJC) launched the Cantonese Interest Class, with support from UM Ng Yee Sun Library (UM Library).  The interest class is from 30 August 2023 to 11 October 2023, attracted more than 30 college students, and received positive feedback.

HFPJC received strong support from the UM Library by connecting a teaching lineup. In the first class, the Assistant University Librarian Mr. Leung Tak Hoi gave an opening speech. HFPJC Associate Master Dr. Jiang Yi and Resident Fellow Ms. Chang Kit Peng, and Mr. Chan Chi Weng, liaison librarian of HFPJC attended the opening session. Mr. Lo Soi Man, a Macau Cantonese studies scholar, and UM librarian, gave the lecture ‘Macau Cantonese Talk’, which mainly introduced the current situation of the Macau language and stimulated the students’ interest in learning Cantonese. In the second class, Prof. Sio Chio Ieong from the Department of Chinese Language and Literature of FAH and UM Librarian Ms. Fong Pou Leng were invited to teach Cantonese pronunciation and rhythm and share some unique language phenomena. The first two classes formed a professional foundation for students’ subsequent Cantonese learning context.

The following classes were taught by RF Chang Kit Peng and Resident Tutor Yang Ye who is a second-year postgraduate student majoring in Chinese linguistics at FAH. The class included daily life practice and relevant teaching materials to guide students in learning the daily use of Cantonese. The learning content included common vocabulary, phrases, sentence patterns in daily life, and Cantonese songs. In a joyful atmosphere, teachers and students had friendly exchanges on the characteristics of Cantonese, taught Cantonese knowledge, and promoted Cantonese culture.

Hu Jiazhi, an HFPJC student who comes from Liaoning Province, learned a lot after participating in the Cantonese Interest Class. When he arrived in Macau, he knew nothing about Cantonese and was worried that he would not be able to integrate into the Cantonese-speaking environment. After finishing all the courses, he recalled the first two important classes and expressed his appreciation for the programme settings: “The basic theoretical knowledge of Cantonese in the first two classes helps a lot, whether it was “Nine Tones”. “Six Tune” or “Three Tones”, I have a clear understanding of the underlying logic of Cantonese. This is very important for a non-native speaker to continue learning Cantonese in the future. The course taught us how to give a brief self-introduction to others, then gradually extended to daily expressions, and finally went deep into conversations under different sessions with local native speakers. After experiencing these trainings, I can use simple Cantonese in my daily life, like ordering in restaurants and purchasing in supermarkets. This also inspired my interest in continuing to learn Cantonese and gaining a deeper understanding of Cantonese culture.”

HFPJC’s first Cantonese Interest Class came to a successful conclusion, providing a rich context for the integration of a multilingual environment in the college in the future. At the same time, we would like to thank UM Library for their great assistance in this event and for providing enormous academic support and resources, and we look forward to further cooperation in the near future.

The College delegation, which consisted of College members and Fellow, Ms. Sara Chang, visited Guangzhou from 28 to 29 October.  During the trip, they had a sharing session with the volunteers from Guangzhou Volunteer Association, provided community services to local children, and visited the patriotic education base.  The trip was fruitful and members gained a lot of memorable experiences in these two days.

The delegation first visited the Guangzhou Volunteer Association and received a warm reception from the local volunteers.  The two groups shared interesting experiences among each other and got inspired by the experiences from other senior volunteers.  The delegation then visited the Guangzhou Second Social (Children) Welfare Home and had some interactive artwork session with the residents.  Together, the two groups made some creative clay paintings which displayed the notion of childhood innocence.  Li Yujie, a student from HFPJC said, ‘Although the children have physical disabilities, they are positive and optimistic and smile at life. God may have closed a door for them, but he has given them a keener perception of other areas’;  Another HFPJC student, Long Zhouchun said, ‘For children with special needs, do not have the opportunity to experience the wonderful world outside. However, I think maybe they are in a special environment jointly built by the government and caring people, and they will feel the beautiful side of the world!’

The delegation also visited the former site of Whampoa Military Academy and the 1911 Revolution Memorial Hall. Through detail descriptions by the onsite curators, members learned about the sacrifices and contributions made by their ancestors during the revolution and national reunification. While being deeply moved, they firmly believe that the ancestors’ patriotic spirit will pass on to the younger generation and our members are dedicated to serve and contribute to our Country.
