Abstract:
With the advance of wireless technology and the development of communication networks, the volume of network traffic increases explosively.  In addition, different applications have diverse quality of service requirements.  3GPP classifies three types of 5G application scenarios: eMBB, uRLLC, and mMTC. Different application scenarios correspond to their own service requirements. How to achieve the diverse quality provision with the co-existence of multi-types of applications and how to address the quality requirements with different application scenarios and applications are facing a lot of challenge. In this talk, we will introduce several efficient data offloading methods and multi-resource allocation methods to address these challenging issues.

IOTSC TALK SERIES: Hierarchical Bayesian Modeling Framework for Data-Driven Uncertainty Quantification and Propagation in Structural Dynamics

2023-05-27T00:00:04+08:00

Dear Colleagues and Students,

The State Key Laboratory of Internet of Things for Smart City would like to invite you to join our “IOTSC Talk Series” on 10/05/2023 (Wednesday).
We are pleased to invite Prof. Xinyu JIA from School of Mechanical Engineering, Hebei University of Technology as the speaker.

Hierarchical Bayesian Modeling Framework for Data-Driven Uncertainty Quantification and Propagation in Structural Dynamics
Speaker: Prof. Xinyu JIA, Assistant Professor, School of Mechanical Engineering, Hebei University of Technology
Date: 10/05/2023 (Wednesday)
Time: 16:00 – 17:00
Language: English
Venue: N21-5/F Exhibition Hall

Abstract:
This talk will discuss the latest advance on hierarchical Bayesian modeling framework (HBM) for performing uncertainty quantification and propagation in structural dynamics. It consists of two topics on the development of the HBM framework on single-level and multi-level dynamical structures. Simulated and experimental studies will show that the proposed HBM framework provides a better account for the parameter uncertainties, distinguishing between irreducible and reducible uncertainties, while the conventional Bayesian modeling framework often underestimates the uncertainties for the parameters and aggregates such uncertainties into model error. The proposed framework is applicable to various disciplines of engineering and science.

Speaker’s Bio:
Dr. Xinyu JIA is currently an Assistant Professor at the School of Mechanical Engineering, Hebei University of Technology (HEBUT), Tianjin. He obtained his PhD degree in University of Thessaly, Greece, funded by Marie Curie Fellowship, and subsequently worked at University of Macau as a postdoc researcher before joining HEBUT. His research interests are computational methods for uncertainty quantification, reliability analysis and structural health monitoring, with a strong focus on Bayesian inference for uncertainty quantification and propagation in structural dynamics.

IOTSC TALK SERIES: Mechanical Genes Extraction of Composite Materials

2023-04-10T00:00:50+08:00

Dear Colleagues and Students,

The State Key Laboratory of Internet of Things for Smart City would like to invite you to join our “IOTSC Talk Series” on 22/03/2022 (Wednesday).
We are pleased to invite Prof. Jianting DU from IOTSC as the speaker.

Mechanical Genes Extraction of Composite Materials
Speaker: Prof. Jianting DU, Research Assistant Professor
Date: 22/03/2022 (Wednesday)
Time: 16:00 – 17:00
Language: English
Venue: N21-5/F Exhibition Hall

Abstract:
The composite materials encountered in the engineering applications (e.g. rocks, concrete) are exhibiting highly heterogeneous, multiscale and multiphase characteristics in their mechanical properties. This complex mechanical behavior is dominated by their nanoscale mechanical genes. However, determination of the mechanical genes continues to be a formidable challenge and hence require innovative and advanced experimental techniques and theoretical analyses.

This talk will discuss a coupled analysis of statistical grid nanoindentation and in-situ phase identification, which is proposed to uncover the mechanical properties of the constituent phases in a composite material and establish the links among its multiscale mechanical properties. This work provides the way to accessing the mechanical properties of building blocks of a composite material, representing a major step towards developing reliable multiscale models for engineering applications.

Speaker’s Bio:
Dr. Jianting DU received his PhD degree in Civil Engineering from Tsinghua University, Beijing, China, in 2020. He studied at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), MA, USA, as a joint PhD student for 18 months (2018-2019). He was a Post-Doctoral Fellow with the University of Hong Kong from 2020 to 2022. In 2023, he joined the State Key Laboratory of Internet of Things for Smart City (IOTSC), University of Macau, Macau, where he is currently a Research Assistant Professor. His research focuses on the multiscale characterization of composite materials (e.g. rocks) and the growth and mobility of submarine debris flows.

IOTSC TALK SERIES——System Support to Cloud Computing: Challenges and Opportunities

2023-03-24T00:00:31+08:00

Dear Colleagues and Students,

The State Key Laboratory of Internet of Things for Smart City would like to invite you to join our “IOTSC Talk Series” on 01/03/2023 (Wednesday).
We are pleased to invite Prof. Xiaobo ZHOU as the speaker.

System Support to Cloud Computing: Challenges and Opportunities
Speaker: Prof. Xiaobo ZHOU, Distinguished Professor, State Key Laboratory of Internet of Things for Smart City

Date: 01/03/2023 (Wednesday)
Time: 16:00 – 17:00
Language: English
Venue: N21-5007 (Exhibition Hall)

Abstract:
Cloud computing systems face the challenges of efficiently hosting a variety of heterogeneous workloads on shared and heterogeneous hardware infrastructure. Data intensive scale-out applications often suffer from severe performance degradation and inefficient resource utilization in multi-tenant cloud systems, largely because of performance interference, contention of shared resources, and importantly, semantic gaps between applications and the underlying computing systems.

This talk will discuss non-invasive cluster memory management and scheduling techniques. It features three technical work, BIG-C, a container-based resource management framework for data-intensive cluster computing; Hermes, a fast memory allocation mechanism implemented in Glibc that adaptively reserves memory for latency-critical services; Holmes, a user-space approach to SMT interference diagnosis and adaptive CPU scheduling that utilizes system-level performance counters to identify, quantify, and mitigate performance interference. The talk will be concluded with perspectives on emerging cloud system research.

Speaker’s Bio:
Prof. Xiaobo ZHOU is currently a Distinguished Professor of IOTSC/FST, University of Macau. His research lies broadly in Computer Network Systems, specifically, Cloud Computing, Distributed Systems, ML Systems, BigData Parallel Processing, and Scalable Internet Services. IOTSC Talk Series: Modeling Flows of Granular Materials: from Grain-Scale Mechanics to Continuum Models

2023-03-01T00:01:03+08:00

Dear Colleagues and Students,

The State Key Laboratory of Internet of Things for Smart City would like to invite you to join our “IOTSC Talk Series” on 03/02/2022 (Friday).
We are pleased to invite Prof. Lu JING from Shenzhen International Graduate School, Tsinghua University as the speaker.

Modeling Flows of Granular Materials: from Grain-Scale Mechanics to Continuum Models
Speaker: Prof. Lu JING, Assistant Professor, Shenzhen International Graduate School, Tsinghua University
Date: 03/02/2022 (Friday)
Time: 11:00 – 12:00
Language: English
Venue: N21-5010 Meeting Room

Abstract:
Flow of granular materials lies at the heart of many geophysical processes and industrial activities. However, accurate modelling of granular flows remains a challenge due to the complex, multiscale behaviors of granular materials ranging from microscopic particle interactions to macroscopic continuum flows. In this talk, two common yet poorly understood aspects of granular flows are discussed: segregation and substrate slip. A multiscale paradigm is followed to tackle each problem by first identifying critical granular mechanisms at the grain level and then providing the associated closures for large-scale continuum modelling. These findings are expected to enhance physics-based granular flow modelling for various geophysical and industrial applications.

Speaker’s Bio:
Dr. Lu JING is Assistant Professor in the Institute for Ocean Engineering, Shenzhen International Graduate School, Tsinghua University. His research is focused on the fundamental mechanics of granular materials and granular-fluid mixtures, aiming to provide scientifically based solutions for geo-hazard mitigation and sediment management across fluvial, coastal, and marine environments. Dr. Jing is a member of TC105 “Geo-Mechanics from Micro to Macro” of the International Society for Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering. In 2021, he received an early career award from NSFC.

2023-02-28T00:00:04+08:00

Dear Colleagues and Students,

The State Key Laboratory of Internet of Things for Smart City would like to invite you to join our “IOTSC Talk Series” on 15/02/2022 (Wednesday).
We are pleased to invite Prof. Jianbing SHEN from IOTSC as the speaker.

A New Perspective from Industry and Academia for 3D Point Cloud Object Detection in Autonomous Driving Cars
Speaker: Prof. Jianbing SHEN
Date: 15/02/2022 (Wednesday)
Time: 16:00 – 17:00
Language: English
Venue: N21-5/F Exhibition Hall

Abstract:
In this talk, I will first introduce two commonly used autonomous driving system solutions in both industry and academia: pure camera-based perception system and the multi-sensor system solution that integrates Lidar and camera sensors. Then, I will focus on the 3D point cloud object detection algorithms for self-driving cars scenarios, including the semi-supervised 3D object detection algorithm based on a small number of labeled point cloud data with spatial-temporal analysis, and the weakly supervised 3D object detection algorithm based on semi-automatic annotation on large-scale unlabeled point cloud data. This research aims to make better use of labeled and unlabeled point cloud data to improve the accuracy of 3D point cloud object detectors and the safety of self-driving cars systems. Then, I will also share the new ideas of the proposed multimodal fusion framework with data augmentation for achieving better 3D object detection performance in two 1st prize winners challenges: IEEE ICRA 2021 Challenge on the nuScenes detection for the AI Driving Olympics in autonomous driving, and IEEE CVPR 2022 ARGOVERSE 3D Object Detection Challenge for Autonomous Driving. Finally, I will also discuss more about the future development of 3D point cloud object detection methods in both industry and academia societies.
