UM Symphonic Band Makes Historic Debut at Lusofonia Festival 2024
The University of Macau Symphonic Band (UMSB), directed by maestro Ng Sa, made a memorable debut at the 2024 GEG Lusofonia Festival, marking a significant milestone as it was the band’s first performance at the world’s largest arts and cultural festival between China and the Portuguese-speaking Countries. Notably, it was also the first time the festival featured an orchestra of such magnitude.
The UMSB captivated audiences with a diverse selection of Lusophone classics, including pieces by Amalia, Sobral, and Dulce Pontes. Their performances also included collaborations with the local music group “Fado Oriente” and its lead vocalist Rita Portela. A standout moment occurred when the ensemble invited four UM students to join them in their rendition of “Amar Pelos Dois”, the most renowned Portuguese song. The students Wang Boya from Faculty of Arts and Humanities (FAH) and Ma Man Kei and Lo Pak Sam College, Zhang NaChuan from FAH and Lui Che Woo College, Wang ZiDong from Faculty of Business Administration and Shiu Pong College, and alumna Loi Un Ieng from Faculty of Education and Cheng Yu Tung College, who is a former member of the UM Choir, demonstrated their dedication to the culture and people by perfecting their Portuguese pronunciations and intonations.
The festival kicked off on 25 October and spanned six vibrant days across two weeks, showcasing the rich cultural heritage of Lusophone countries. Organized by the Cultural Affairs Bureau and Galaxy Entertainment Group, and co-organized by the Macao Government Tourism Office and the Municipal Affairs Bureau, the 2024 GEG Lusofonia Festival leverages the bridging role of Macao as a base for exchange and cooperation where diverse cultures coexist with Chinese culture as the mainstream, and advance the establishment of Macao as a cultural exchange centre for China and the Portuguese-speaking countries.
The UMSB’s participation added a dynamic musical element to the festival, enriching the showcase of music, cuisine, and art from the Lusophone world and leaving a lasting impression on all attendees. The organizers expressed their appreciation for the UMSB’s contribution to this vibrant cultural celebration.
