FAH-DAD Art and Academic Lecture Series No.10 : A Mural and An Empty Bed – Searching for the Discursive Logic in a Medieval Tome in Shanxi
A Song and Jin Dynasty mural tomb (M1) in Haolao Village, Huguan, Shanxi, is located in the southeastern Shanxi region at the western foothills of Taihang Mountain. The tomb conveys some unusual semantic information in terms of architectural form, mural content, and ink calligraphy. These information seem to tell the story of the same person from different perspectives. The architecture and decoration of the entire tomb seem to implicitly express lament and sorrow for the fate and suffering of the deceased. This lecture will focus on the various manifestations of this tomb that exceed the”conventional”, and examine the message connotation hidden in it from three levels: the architectural form of the tomb, the content of the murals, and the text of the poem; and through careful reading of different materials, Using the co-contained discourse logic, we try to find the possibility of a historical figure, and then achieve an in-depth understanding of this tomb.
