Chao Kuang Piu College Guizhou Voluntary Teaching (2024-12)
In September 2024, the CKPC Voluntary Teaching Team recruited new members. After more than three months of preparation, from December 23 to 27, 19 team members travelled to Guizhou Province to teach at Gantuan Mei’e Primary School in Congjiang County. This was the eighth time that the Volunteer Teaching Team had served the children of Gantuan Mei’e Primary School. The Team gave classes on English, science, sports, arts, morning and afternoon reading.
In recent years, the school has seen an increase in the number of students. Most are new immigrants from the western regions of Congjiang County. It now has nearly 800 students in 17 classes. The Team formed three groups to concentrate on teaching the third and fourth grades.
The voluntary teaching included some innovative contents, such as small classroom experiments in science classes, using books to demonstrate friction, table tennis to demonstrate centripetal force, paper tube projectors, and floating art based on the mutual repulsion of oil and water. The children all found it very fascinating. Some lessons incorporated Chinese elements. For example, the science class introduced the bridges in Guizhou and the concepts of beam bridges, arch bridges and the direction of force. The English class incorporated Chinese place names into English words, and also used classroom games to improve children’s memory of words. The art classes included rattles, music appreciation, flip books. The physical education classes had basketball, Frisbee, tug-of-war, etc. There were also new additions to the afternoon reading, including a short play on “Anna’s New Coat.”
The most special experience during this visit was participating in the school’s sports and art festival. Children wearing ethnic costumes of the Dong, Miao, Yao, Shui and other ethnic groups performed dances, songs, and catwalks, allowing the group members to experience firsthand the cultural characteristics of each ethnic group. On the last day, the Voluntary Teaching Team leaders had a meeting with the school principal. The team leader reported on the achievements of the volunteer teaching, and the principal fully acknowledged and appreciated the value of the volunteer teaching.
The team conducted summary session every evening and adjusted teaching and activity arrangements, including rearranging class time due to the school’s art festival. During the summary meeting on the last day, the members shared their thoughts and gains from participating in volunteer teaching, including the mission and inheritance of the team, the friendship and mutual help among the members, the impact and changes on themselves, etc. Finally, one of the deputy leaders was established as the leader of the ninth term, and a new deputy leader was elected. The Team look forward to continuing to serve children in mountainous areas in the future!
