In 2017, when the Macao Museum of Art presented the solo exhibition Xu Bing: Language Art, the artist was deeply engaged in the creation of his first experimental film Dragonfly Eyes. Regrettably, the work could not be shown to audiences in Macao at that time.Over the past seven years, the world has entered a state of unprecedented turbulence: the rapid emergence of new technologies, the constant reconfiguration of concepts, and the reshaping of naming systems have all rendered much of humanity’s millennia-old cultural framework ineffective, compelling everyone to rethink from the same starting point.
Xu Bing once remarked that art is inherently fluid and elusive, always shifting as society itself changes. For him, the artist is an “artisan of thought,” one who refines ideas through studio practice and seeks to confront the perplexities of the age with unique forms.
Invited by the University of Macau, Xu Bing will now share with its professors and students his current reflections on art through the talk: Doing Art, Do What?
