MCM College: Portuguese Egg-tart Experiential learning Workshop
On September 17th, Camões House, Moon Chun Memorial College, hosted a Portuguese Egg Tart (Pastel de Nata) experiential learning workshop, blending culinary art with a touch of history.
Following the guidance of an expert, students took on a ‘hands-on’ masterclass of creating this iconic pastry. The workshop began with a brief introduction to the eggtart’s fascinating origins in Portugal, notably its creation by Catholic monks before the 18th century and its popularization in Lisbon’s monasteries. This historical context enriched the practical session that followed.
Students learned the intricate phases: from-scratch process: laminating the pastry to achieve the signature flaky crust, carefully shaping it into molds, and preparing the classic, smooth egg custard filling. The session culminated in the successful production of baking, and savoring first hand, oven-fresh golden-brown Portuguese style eggtarts. This activity served as a educational bridge – connecting students to an important feature of Macao’s Lusophone heritage and cultural gastronomic icon.
