Performing on the Bay Area Stage — UM Symphonic Band Percussion Section Participates in “Shengdongjixi・The Future of Sound — Greater Bay Area Percussion Pioneer Gala”
The Percussion Section of the University of Macau Symphonic Band recently participated in the “Shengdongjixi・The Future of Sound — Greater Bay Area Percussion Pioneer Gala” held in Shenzhen. The event brought together numerous professional and academic percussion ensembles from Shenzhen, Hong Kong, and Macao, presenting a wide variety of performances that fully showcased the flourishing development of musical exchange and collaboration within the Greater Bay Area.
At the concert, the University of Macau performed three pieces: “Hapimelo” (by Kato Daiki), “The Cavern” (by Riley Hodges), and “Teamwork” (by Lynn Glassock). Each work was distinctive in style: Hapimelo conveyed the intertwining of “happiness” and “melody” through a lively and bright atmosphere; The Cavern evoked an adventurous and mysterious mood, testing the ensemble’s unity and rhythmic precision; Teamwork, as its title suggests, highlighted the importance of collaboration in ensemble playing, with every member contributing to the layered musical structure through mutual cooperation.
The participating students included CHANG WENG IAN from Faculty of Law and Cheong Kun Lun College, U NGAI UN from Faculty of Business Administration, NG CHEOK IAM from Faculty of Business Administration and Cheng Yu Tung College, IM KAI HEI from Faculty of Science and Technology and Chao Kuang Piu College, NG IN POU from Faculty of Science and Technology and Cheong Kun Lun College, NG NOK LAM from Faculty of Business Administration and Shiu Pong College, and KOU CHI WA from Institute of Collaborative Innovation.
With their professional training and seamless collaboration, the seven percussion members demonstrated solid musicianship and team spirit on stage, earning warm applause from the audience. Beyond being a performance experience, this was also a valuable opportunity for cross-regional cultural exchange, allowing the students to gain much from their interactions with other universities and music ensembles across the Greater Bay Area.
The Student Affairs Office will continue to provide more opportunities for students to participate in professional performances and international cultural exchanges, enabling them to grow through artistic practice and to use music as a bridge to deepen cultural and artistic exchange between UM and the Greater Bay Area.
