UM Symphony Orchestra Makes Its Public Debut at GEG Lusofonia Festival 2025
The University of Macau Symphony Orchestra (UMSO) made its first public appearance at the GEG Lusofonia Festival 2025, held in 2 November at the Taipa Houses–Museum. Under the baton of Conductor Sa Ng, the orchestra delivered a refreshing and captivating performance, adding a youthful yet elegant musical touch to the vibrant cultural celebration.
As one of the newly established Cultural and Arts University Teams under the Student Resources Section (SRS), Student Affairs Office, UMSO brings together passionate student musicians from various faculties. Dedicated to promoting symphonic music and campus arts education, the orchestra presented a diverse programme featuring “Cinema Paradiso”, “Tico Tico”, “The Girl From Ipanema”, and “Pure Imagination”. The concert concluded with a well-loved Chinese classic, “Qing Hua Ci”, performed by the full orchestra as an encore.
A highlight of the performance was The Girl From Ipanema, featuring local Brazilian singer Jandira Silva, whose gentle and soulful voice infused the piece with a touch of Latin flair. The bass guitar section also welcomed guest performers Henry and Jason, students from Macao Anglican College, creating a wonderful cross-school and cross-cultural collaboration.
The formation of UMSO marks a new milestone in the University of Macau’s artistic development. Under the professional guidance of Conductor Sa Ng, the orchestra will continue to participate in major university ceremonies and cultural events, fostering artistic growth and promoting cultural exchange within and beyond the campus.
The UMSO will hold its inaugural on-campus concert next semester, featuring a new selection of inspiring and imaginative works. All UM students and staff are warmly invited to join and share this musical journey together!
