UM holds ceremony to mark acquisition of annotated edition of

 Os Lusíadas do Grande Luís de Camoens

In commemoration of the 500th anniversary of the birth of the famous Portuguese poet and playwright Luís de Camões, the University of Macau Library (UM Library) held a book presentation ceremony to mark the acquisition of the annotated edition of Os Lusíadas do Grande Luís de Camoens published in 1613. The rare book, which has been included in the collection of the UM Library, contains what is believed to be the first biography of the poet.

Rui Martins, vice rector of the University of Macau (UM), said in his speech that the rare book will enrich the collection of the UM Library and provide valuable research resources for students, faculty, and researchers. It will also facilitate UM’s academic and cultural exchanges with other higher education institutions and the Chinese and Portuguese communities.

Born in Lisbon, Luís de Camões is widely acclaimed as the most important figure in Portuguese literature, as well as an important voice in the world of epic literature. His epic poem, Os Lusíadas, portrays the discovery of the maritime route to India by the Portuguese navigator Vasco da Gama and celebrates the pioneering spirit of the Portuguese nation in the Age of Discovery. The rare book UM acquired is a rare annotated edition of the epic poem, published in Portugal in 1613. The preliminary pages contain what is considered to be the first biography of Camões, written by Pedro de Mariz, who was a writer contemporary with the poet and whose biographical testimony holds great credibility.

After the ceremony, José Francisco Rodrigues and Helena Carvalhão Buescu, professors at the University of Lisbon and members of the Academy of Sciences of Lisbon, gave talks titled ‘Mathematics and Literature’ and ‘Os Lusíadas, the Book of My Life’, respectively. Rodrigues mentioned that Camões was a genius who acquired knowledge of Renaissance cosmology from the great mathematician Pedro Nunes’s book Tratado da Esfera, which reflected the humanist culture of the time. Buescu said that Camões is the greatest name in Portuguese literature and suggested that UM should establish a research centre dedicated to the poet.

Also present at the ceremony were Anabela Ritchie, member of the University Council of UM, and Wu Jianzhong, university librarian of UM.

A Universidade de Macau realiza a cerimónia de apresentação da edição anotada de “Os Lusíadas do Grande Luís de Camoens”

A Biblioteca da Universidade de Macau realizou uma cerimónia de apresentação da edição anotada de 1613 de “Os Lusíadas do Grande Luís de Camoens”, para comemorar os 500 anos do nascimento do famoso poeta e dramaturgo português Luís de Camões. Esta edição contém aquela que é considerada a primeira biografia de Luís de Camões.

Na cerimónia, o Prof. Rui Martins, Vice-reitor da Universidade de Macau, salientou no seu discurso que a aquisição deste precioso livro raro irá engrandecer ainda mais a coleção da Biblioteca da Universidade da UM e que o mesmo é também um valioso recurso de investigação. Será também uma mais valia para o intercâmbio académico e cultural entre a UM, outras instituições de ensino superior e as comunidades chinesa e portuguesa.

Luís de Camões é considerado uma das figuras mais importantes da literatura portuguesa e aclamado como uma voz importante no mundo da literatura épica. A obra retrata os feitos do navegador português Vasco da Gama na abertura do caminho marítimo para a Índia e exalta o corajoso espírito pioneiro da nação portuguesa na época dos Descobrimentos. Esta aquisição é uma edição rara e anotada de um importante poema épico português, publicada em Portugal em 1613. As páginas preliminares contêm aquela que se considera ser a primeira biografia de Camões, da autoria de Pedro de Mariz, uma pessoa bastante próxima do seu tempo e cujo testemunho biográfico é de um valor inegável.

Após a cerimónia, o Prof. José Francisco Rodrigues e a Prof.ª Helena Carvalhão Buescu (ambos docentes da Universidade de Lisboa e membros da Academia das Ciências de Lisboa) proferiram os seminários “Matemática e Literatura” e “Os Lusíadas: O Livro da Minha Vida”, respetivamente. O Prof. José Francisco Rodrigues referiu que Luís de Camões foi de facto um Génio, uma vez que tinha conhecimentos sobre o Tratado da Esfera do grande Matemático Pedro Nunes, obra sobre a Cosmologia do período Renascentista, e que reflectia a Cultura Humanista da época. Por outro lado, a Prof.ª Helena Carvalhão Buescu referiu também que Luís de Camões é o maior nome da literatura portuguesa, e sugeriu a criação de um Centro de Estudos Camonianos na Universidade de Macau.

A cerimónia contou ainda com a presença da Dra. Anabela Ritchie, membro do Conselho Universitário da UM e do Dr. Wu Jianzhong, bibliotecário da UM.
