MCMC College Macau Culture Series “The Fall of a Port City: Macau’s Other Path to Modernity”

MCM College is delighted to have invited Professor Sheyla Zandonai from the University of Macau Department of History to give a talk on Macau Culture on 27 March 2024.

During her captivating presentation, Professor Zandonai laid out, in simple terms, the historical development of Macau during the era of the big discovery and China’s development. She also shed light on Macau’s historical transformation during a period when it was losing its prominence as a global trading hub in southern China, following the British takeover of Hong Kong in 1843. Professor Zandonai further analyzed the development of new infrastructure, the preservation of traditional business alternatives, and the adoption of innovative strategies for political and economic survival. These endeavors allowed Macau to postpone abandoning its maritime heritage while simultaneously embracing the rise of new elites and a fresh vision for the city, emphasizing its transition into a more localized and regional economy.
