UM organises science outreach event on urban disaster and risk management for primary school students

The fifth edition of the science outreach event on urban disaster and risk management for primary school students was held at the University of Macau (UM). Teachers, students and parents from nine Macao primary schools learned about urban disaster and risk management through laboratory visits, lectures by experts, science games, and works of science popularisation. The activities also enhanced the innovation capability, safety awareness, and humanities qualities of primary students.

The event, themed on urban storm surges and disaster risk management, was organised by the Risk and Insurance Research Branch of China Civil Engineering Society, and jointly hosted by the Centre for Science and Engineering Promotion and the State Key Laboratory of Internet of Things for Smart City of UM. Zhou Wanhuan, associate dean of UM’s Faculty of Science and Technology, and Zhang Dongmei, professor at Tongji University, gave speeches at the opening ceremony, respectively. The participants attended lectures by UM experts on floor vibrations and thunderstorms and engaged in discussions with the experts. Under the guidance of UM doctoral and master’s students, the primary school students played science games to gain insights into reinforced sand and sponge cities. In addition, certificates were presented to students for their creative science drawings and to those who had demonstrated outstanding performance in the activities. The participants highly appreciated the educational value of the event.
