To promote exchange between students from the University of Macau and Shanghai universities, Chao Kuang Piu College at the University of Macau(UM) and Meng Xiancheng College at East China Normal University jointly organized a summer exchange program entitled “Urban and Cultural Development: Focusing on Shanghai and Macao.” The program lasted for eight days and involved 20 students from both colleges visiting Shanghai and Macao. The students were divided into five joint teams to conduct field studies, to explore and report on various topics related to humanities, geography, technology, cultural creativity, and nature. Macao and Shanghai have deep cultural origins and are cities where Chinese and Western cultures first blended. Therefore, under the theme “Shanghai and Macao: Exploring the Colorful Journey of Culture,” the students from Shanghai and Macao embarked on this exchange.

To deeply experience these cultural characteristics, the team leaders from Meng Xiancheng College, led the joint teams to visit Zhujiajiao Ancient Town, which has the characteristics of a Jiangnan water town. They also visited the historical museum, the Museum of Historical Relics, and the Museum of Ancient Coins at the Putuo Campus of East China Normal University. Later, the five joint teams focused on the five themes of “Nature in Shanghai,” “Technology in Shanghai,” “Humanities in Shanghai,” “Geography in Shanghai,” and “Cultural Creativity in Shanghai” for their investigations. They visited the Memorial Hall of the Chinese Left-wing Writers’ Association, M50 Creative Park, Shanghai Bund Art Museum, Shanghai Pudong Urban Planning Exhibition Center and Art Center, Shanghai Library, the site of the First National Congress of the Chinese Communist Party, etc. These visits allowed the students to deeply experience Shanghai’s unique historical and cultural heritage and feel the customs of Shanghai.

In addition, the students also visited communities in Shanghai and provided services to the loving summer tutoring class in Wuqing Town. They introduced the cultural heritage, food, street characteristics, and local customs of both Shanghai and Macao to the primary school students in Wuqing Town interactively and interestingly. The students also personally experienced the importance of serving the community and the spirit of mutual assistance.
The joint teams later arrived in Macao and, upon reaching Chao Kuang Piu College at the University of Macau, the college specially invited Yu Jiannan, the president of the Macao Youth Tea Culture Promotion Association, to introduce the basic knowledge of tea and China’s contribution to tea culture. The president also led the teachers and students to experience tea tasting.

The joint teams then visited famous landmarks in Macao, including the Ruins of St. Paul’s, the ‘Leal Senado’ Building, Renci Church, and Senado Square. Besides, they also visited the “Focus” exhibition at the Macao Museum of Art, the photo exhibition “Working Together for a New Journey: 25 Years of Supplying Mainland Agricultural and Food Products to Macao” and the Macao Return Gift Exhibition Hall. These activities allowed the students to stroll through the World Heritage sites in Macao, visit cultural exhibitions on different themes, gain a firsthand understanding of Macao’s unique blend of Chinese and Western cultures, and the support provided by the country for Macao’s development.

This year marks the seventh collaboration between Chao Kuang Piu College College and Meng Xiancheng College for this activity. The teachers and students of both colleges have established deep friendships through years of cooperation, enhancing the connection between universities in Shanghai and Macao. The deans and teachers of both colleges also shared their experiences in holistic education, discussing and improving measures for college education. The participants from Macao expressed that this exchange activity provided them with the opportunity to personally experience and engage with Shanghai’s culture, broadening their horizons. Despite the summer heat, they were inspired by the rich history, vibrant atmosphere, and the fusion of traditional and modern elements in Shanghai. The students from Shanghai also appreciated the chance to explore Macao’s unique blend of Chinese and Western cultures and were impressed by its World Heritage sites.
