UM Chinese Orchestra’s Hong Kong Exchange Activity Promotes Development and Inheritance of Chinese Music Culture in the Greater Bay Area

The University of Macau Chinese Orchestra (UMCO) visited the Chinese Orchestra of the University of Hong Kong, the Chinese University of Hong Kong, and the Hong Kong Polytechnic University from March 4th to March 5th, 2023 for a music exchange program. The purpose of this exchange activity was to strengthen the relationship between UMCO and the universities in Hong Kong, learn about the managerial ideas and concepts of other university orchestras, improve the management of UMCO, as well as the sense of belonging among members.

During the exchange trip to Hong Kong, UMCO members participated in various activities, including campus visits, immersive experience, in-depth discussions etc. The exchange program provided an opportunity for UMCO members to converse with students and discuss topics such as orchestra rehearsals, performance preparations, and student life. After exchanging ideas, members concluded the importance of disseminating Chinese culture. They witnessed how different orchestras allocate resources effectively to promote Chinese music culture. This trip broadened members’ horizons and enlightened their understanding on Chinese music culture development.

Ni Cheng, the leader of UMCO, said, “We felt the passion of our Hong Kong counterparts for Chinese music and their sense of responsibility as a team.” Huang Jingting, the leader of the CUHK Chinese Music Society of New Asia College, said, “Through this exchange program, we learnt the experiences and insights of our counterparts, UMCO, regarding teaching and learning of Chinese music, orchestral operation, and campus culture. This was a valuable opportunity. We hope both universities will have more opportunities for exchange and cooperation in the future to support each other’s progress and promote the development of Chinese music in both regions.”

The exchange program was a great success not only for the future partnership of UMCO but also as an educational value for all four universities. UMCO will hold a music concert with the Chinese University of Hong Kong in April and with the Hong Kong Polytechnic University in November this year at University of Macau, further promoting Chinese music culture, showcasing the strength of each school’s Chinese orchestra, and contributing to the development and inheritance of Chinese music culture in the Greater Bay Area.
