【Concert Details】
Date: 22/01/2025 Wednesday
Time: 20:00
Venue: University of Macau – University Hall (N2)
Conductor: Tony Cheng-Te Yeh
Programme:
Carl Maria von Weber: Overture to “Der Freischutz”
Richard Wagner: Siegfried Idyll, WWV 103
Georges Bizet: L’Ariesienne Suite No. 1 & 2
On 22 January, Tony Cheng-Te Yeh, Assistant Conductor of the Macao Orchestra, will lead a talented ensemble of musicians onto the campus of the University of Macau! They promise to present audiences with an opera-themed performance, the University Concert “Legendary Music”, showcasing a selection of theatrical pieces from various eras and styles brought vividly to life. The concert invites listeners to experience the joys and sorrows of opera through the lens of classical music.
Weber: Overture to “Der Freischütz”
Premiering in Berlin in 1821, “Der Freischütz” captivated audiences worldwide, cementing composer Carl Maria von Weber’s reputation and earning its place as the first great German Romantic opera. The overture masterfully introduces the opera’s themes and characters through different wind and string instruments. Listen closely as the instruments bring each element to life.
Wagner: Siegfried Idyll, WWV 103
This tender symphonic poem by German composer Richard Wagner was a gift to his wife, which also celebrated the birth of their son, Siegfried. With its lush and intimate melodies, the composition captures a deeply personal story of love while radiating poetic brilliance.
Bizet: L’Arlésienne suites No.1 & 2
French composer Georges Bizet originally composed this piece as incidental music for Alphonse Daudet’s three-act tragedy “L’Arlésienne”. Although the play itself failed to achieve success, the score was later rearranged into two orchestral suites, which gained widespread acclaim and enduring popularity.
